  • Corey Seager SS | TEX

Rangers' Corey Seager: Progressing to cage work

Seager (back) is scheduled to hit soft toss in the batting cage Sunday in addition to fielding groundballs, Kennedi Landry of MLB.com reports.

Seager continues to do light baseball activities as he works his way back from lower-back inflammation, which sent him to the injured list at the start of July after spending time on the IL with the same injury earlier in the campaign. The veteran shortstop is without an official timeline for his return but doesn't seem likely to be back in the immediate future. According to Landry, the Rangers expect Seager to be back "eventually" this season.

  • Jose Caballero SS | NYY

Yankees' Jose Caballero: On bench for matinee

Caballero is out of the lineup for Game 1 of Sunday's doubleheader against the Dodgers.

The 29-year-old went 0-for-4 during the first game of the second half Friday but will hit the bench Sunday for Game 1 of the twin bill. Anthony Volpe is picking up a start at shortstop in place of Caballero, who seems likely to rejoin the lineup for the nightcap, either at shortstop or another position.

  • Bobby Witt SS | KC

Royals' Bobby Witt: Managing back tightness

Manager Matt Quatraro said that Witt is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Padres due to back tightness, Anne Rogers of MLB.com reports.

The 26-year-old went 0-for-4 with a strikeout while playing through the injury Saturday, and the Royals will be cautious with their All-Star shortstop. Witt should be considered day-to-day heading into Monday's series opener against San Francisco.

  • Jeremy Pena SS | HOU

Astros' Jeremy Pena: Remaining on bench Sunday

Pena (hamstring) is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Orioles, Chandler Rome of The Athletic reports.

Pena was pulled from Saturday's contest due to right hamstring cramps and will miss at least one start due to the injury. The veteran shortstop is still participating in baseball activities, per Rome, which could indicate that Pena will quickly rejoin the starting nine. Nick Allen is starting in his place and batting ninth Sunday.

  • Willy Adames SS | SF

Giants' Willy Adames: Goes yard in loss

Adames went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Saturday's 4-3 loss to the Mariners.

Adames launched a home run to right field in the sixth inning, recording his second homer in his last two games. The veteran shortstop has recorded at least one hit in three straight games and is now batting .222 with 10 RBI, seven runs scored, three long balls and a stolen base across 51 plate appearances in July. He's slashing .230/.280/.432 with 47 runs scored, 42 RBI, 17 home runs and two stolen bases in 393 plate appearances this season.

  • Otto Lopez SS | MIA

    Marlins' Otto Lopez: Idle Sunday

Lopez (finger) is out of Sunday's lineup for Miami's matchup against Milwaukee.

After taking a ground ball to his right ring finger in the second inning of Saturday's game, Lopez will be on the bench for the series finale against Milwaukee. Javier Sanoja will play shortstop and bat cleanup in Lopez's absence on Sunday.

  • Bobby Witt SS | KC

Royals' Bobby Witt: Not in Sunday's lineup

Witt is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Padres.

Witt went 0-for-8 with a walk and three strikeouts in the first two games of the second half, and it's interesting he's already receiving a day off given that he started Kansas City's first 76 games of the season and only hit the bench once he sustained a Grade 1 MCL sprain in his right knee. There's been no indication that the 26-year-old suffered a setback or is dealing with a new injury, but it's worth keeping an eye on his status heading into Monday's series opener versus San Francisco.

  • Billy Carlson SS | CHW

White Sox's Billy Carlson: Moves past thumb issue

Carlson (thumb) has gone 3-for-6 with three walks, three stolen bases, three RBI and two runs in two games since being reinstated from Single-A Kannapolis' 7-day injured list Friday.

Kannapolis placed Carlson on the IL on May 26 after he was diagnosed with a non-displaced fracture of his left thumb, but he was cleared to rejoin the Single-A club coming out of the All-Star break after completed a three-game rehab assignment in the rookie-level Arizona Complex League. Over 197 plate appearances on the season with Kannapolis, the 19-year-old shortstop is slashing .261/.388/.342 with no home runs and 12 stolen bases.

  • Tigers' Kevin McGonigle: Doubles, scores twice in win

McGonigle went 2-for-5 with a double and two runs scored in Saturday's 7-0 win over the Angels.

Like he did throughout the first half of the season, McGonigle served as an effective offensive catalyst for the Tigers Saturday night in Los Angeles. The rookie infielder now has a .389 on-base percentage, which is good for ninth in the majors. McGonigle also has 60 walks versus only 59 strikeouts through 95 games, and his good eye at the plate along with his strong contact skills should make the 21-year-old a fairly reliable fantasy option the rest of the way.

  • Jacob Wilson SS | ATH

Athletics' Jacob Wilson: Sets tone with leadoff homer

Wilson went 3-for-6 with a home run, three total runs and two total RBI in a 15-1 rout of the Nationals on Saturday.

Wilson foreshadowed a big day by the A's offense when he launched a leadoff long ball of Zack Littell in the bottom of the first inning. The third-year infielder added two more hits, including a run-scoring single in the seventh. Wilson has carried a strong end to the first half with a standout start to the second -- he now has a six-game hitting streak during which he's batting .458 (11-for-24), though Saturday marked his first RBI of that stretch.
