Red Sox's Andruw Monasterio: Extends on-base streak
Monasterio went 1-for-2 with a stolen base and an RBI in Wednesday's 4-0 win over the White Sox.
Monasterio has emerged from nowhere to become Boston's starting shortstop and is holding his own. Wednesday, he extended an on-base streak to 17 games, during which he's 22-for-55 (.400) with seven walks (.470 OBP), one steal, eight doubles, one triple, two home runs, 13 RBI and 10 runs scored. The player Monasterio replaced, Marcelo Mayer (forearm), has since been traded to the Giants. Mayer had been a replacement for the injured Trevor Story (sports hernia), who will be re-evaluated after Boston's current homestand to determine how close he is to a minor-league rehab assignment.

Red Sox's Andruw Monasterio: Goes yard in extra-inning win
Monasterio went 3-for-4 with a two-run home run and a hit-by-pitch in Wednesday's 4-2 extra-inning win over the Athletics.
Monasterio provided the margin of victory when he went deep in the 10th inning. He saw a nine-game hitting streak end Tuesday, but he bounced back Wednesday with his fifth multi-hit effort over 17 contests in July. Monasterio is now batting .259 with a .779 OPS, six homers, 20 RBI, 23 runs scored, 17 doubles, one triple and two stolen bases over 204 plate appearances this season. As long as Boston's middle infield is plagued by injuries, Monasterio should continue to have a clear path to playing time at shortstop.

Monasterio started a fifth consecutive game at shortstop and extended a hit streak to nine contests, during which he's 12-for-26 (.462) with six walks, six doubles, one triple, one home run, five RBI and five runs scored. Even before the Red Sox optioned Tsung-Che Cheng back to the minors over the weekend, Monasterio had taken hold of the shortstop spot. It should be his until Trevor Story (sports hernia) is ready to return at some point in August.

Monasterio will start at shortstop and bat eighth in Sunday's game against the Blue Jays.
Monasterio will head into Sunday's contest riding a seven-game hitting streak, during which he's gone 10-for-20 with seven extra-base hits to bring his season-long slash line up to .250/.301/.442. He'll be making his fourth straight start and appears to have supplanted Tsung-Che Cheng as the preferred option at shortstop, but Monasterio likely won't have a long leash as an everyday player. Boston is expected to get Trevor Story (sports hernia) back from the injured list at some point in August, and everyday third baseman Caleb Durbin will begin getting pregame work at shortstop as well in an effort to increase his versatility.

Monasterio will be back on the bench after he made two straight starts against left-handed pitchers to close out the Red Sox's weekend series with the Rays, going 3-for-6 with three doubles, two walks, two runs and one RBI between those contests. Monasterio opened the scoring in the second inning by taking Noah Schultz deep for his fourth home run of the season. Following a single in the sixth, he swiped his second stolen base of the year. After a 1-for-15 slump to end June, the infielder has collected a hit in each of his four July games. Across 54 games this season, Monasterio is batting .228 with a .659 OPS.
