  • Braves' Griffin Canning: Sent to Atlanta

The Angels traded Canning to Atlanta on Thursday in exchange for Jorge Soler.

Canning started a career-high 31 games in 2024 but struggled mightily throughout the year, turning in a 5.19 ERA and 1.40 WHIP alongside a 130:66 K:BB through 171.2 innings. Now in Atlanta, the 28-year-old righty will likely compete for a rotation spot during spring training. Otherwise, he could be moved into a multi-inning relief role.

Angels' Jorge Soler: Traded to Angels

The Angels acquired Soler from Atlanta on Thursday in exchange for Griffin Canning, Francys Romero of BeisbolFR.com reports.

There's no money changing hands, so the Angels will be solely responsible for the $32 million Soler is owed over the next two seasons. Slated to turn 33 in February, Soler slashed .241/.338/.442 with 21 home runs over 142 regular-season games between San Francisco and Atlanta in 2024. He is likely to be used mostly at designated hitter with the Angels, although general manager Perry Minasian said Thursday that Soler could play some in the outfield, as well, per Taylor Blake Ward of the Sporting Tribune.

  • Dylan Covey RP | PHI

Mets' Dylan Covey: Signs MLB deal with Mets

Covey signed a one-year, major-league contract with the Mets on Thursday.

Covey spent the first four months of last season working his way back from a shoulder injury he suffered in spring training with the Phillies. After beginning his rehab assignment in late July, he turned in a 2.66 ERA and 1.23 WHIP across 20.1 innings split between three different minor-league affiliates. He was unable to make an appearance in the majors last year, but he'll immediately get a chance to contribute to the Mets' bullpen in 2025, likely as a middle reliever.

  • Yoan Moncada 3B | CHW

Yoan Moncada: Free agent after option declined

The White Sox declined Moncada's $25 million club option for 2025, Francys Romero of BeisbolFR.com reports.

The veteran infielder will be given a $5 million buyout. It was an obvious move, given where the White Sox' roster stands and the fact that Moncada was limited to just 12 games in 2024 and 92 games in 2023 due to injury. Moncada won't turn 30 until May, but durability concerns and inconsistent production could point to a bearish market this winter.

  • Randal Grichuk RF | ARI

    Randal Grichuk: Declines mutual option

Grichuk has declined his end of a $6 million mutual option for 2025, Mark Feinsand of MLB.com reports.

He'll receive a $1.5 million buyout from Arizona and is now a free agent. Grichuk thrived in a short-side platoon role with the Diamondbacks in 2024, slashing .291/.348/.528 with 12 homers in 106 games, which included a .914 OPS versus left-handed pitching. The 33-year-old might be able to land a multi-year contract this winter after his strong season.

  • Keynan Middleton: Free agent after option declined

The Cardinals will decline Middleton's (forearm) $6 million club option for 2025, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.

He will be paid a $1 million buyout. Middleton was limited to just five rehab appearances in 2024 due to a right flexor tendon injury which eventually required surgery. The reliever is unlikely to be ready for Opening Day.

  • Lance Lynn SP | STL

Lance Lynn: Option for 2025 not picked up

The Cardinals will decline Lynn's (knee) $11 million club option for 2025, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.

The team will pay Lynn a $1 million buyout instead. Lynn posted a 3.84 ERA, 1.34 WHIP and 109:44 K:BB in 117.1 innings across 23 starts for St. Louis in 2024. He ended the season on the 15-day injured list with right knee inflammation but should be healthy by spring training, and the 37-year-old has said he intends to continue his career in 2025.

  • Kyle Gibson SP | STL

    Kyle Gibson: Club option declined

The Cardinals will decline Gibson's $12 million club option for 2025, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.

He will be paid a $1 million buyout instead and allowed to test free agency. Gibson, 37, had a solid 2024 campaign during his lone year in St. Louis, collecting a 4.24 ERA and a 151:68 K:BB over 169.2 innings covering 30 starts. However, with the Cardinals looking to trim payroll they've elected to move on from the veteran right-hander.

  • Alex Kirilloff LF | MIN

Alex Kirilloff: Announces retirement from baseball

Kirilloff announced his retirement from professional baseball Thursday.

In a post on his Instagram account, Kirilloff wrote that the numerous injuries he's dealt with "have taken a toll on me mentally and physically" and he feels he's no longer able to give baseball "the total commitment it requires." Kirilloff, who turns 27 next week, is currently rehabbing a lower-back injury and has also had two wrist surgeries and back surgery. He slashed .248/.309/.412 with 27 home runs over 249 games covering parts of four seasons with the Twins.

  • Aaron Judge CF | NYY

Yankees' Aaron Judge: Homers in Game 5 loss

Judge went 2-for-3 with a two-run homer and two walks in Wednesday's loss to the Dodgers.

Judge sent Yankee Stadium into a frenzy in the bottom of the first inning when he followed a one-out Juan Soto walk with a two-run homer to the opposite field. He also added a double and a pair of free passes. Judge's heroics were ultimately too little, too late as the Yankees blew a 5-0 lead, partly because of a key Judge misplay in the outfield amid a terrible defensive inning for the Yankees, and the Dodgers went on to capture the World Series title. He clubbed three home runs and drove in nine in 14 games this postseason, but Judge also batted just .184 with a 31.3 percent strikeout rate.
