Gamboa will operate as the opening pitcher for the Red Sox in Game 1 of Friday's doubleheader against the Cubs, Mac Cerullo of the Boston Herald reports.

Gamboa will garner his third start of the season, albeit in a non-traditional fashion once again. The southpaw pitcher has produced a 1.16 ERA and 1.06 WHIP over 31 innings in 20 appearances, including two starts, with Boston this season. It's unclear who will follow him out of the bullpen as the team's bulk pitcher, but Jake Bennett is a top candidate.

Smith struck out the side to earn the save Thursday against Boston.

Smith put the cherry on top of Cleveland's shutout victory, helping the Guardians clinch their third straight playoff berth. The star closer hasn't been scored upon in 12 consecutive outings, last blowing a save Aug. 5 against the Mets. Smith has a sparkling 1.96 ERA, 0.97 WHIP and 107:23 K:BB across 73.1 innings, converting 41 of his 46 save opportunities.

Suarez had his contract selected from Triple-A Norfolk on Thursday.

Suarez will join the major-league roster ahead of the team's final series of the regular season beginning Friday in the Bronx. Suarez has produced a 4.12 ERA and 1.25 WHIP with 41 strikeouts over 59 innings in 27 appearances with Baltimore this season. Right-handed pitcher Trey Gibson was optioned to the team's Spring Training Complex in a corresponding move.

Barnett will start Thursday's game against the Astros in Sacramento.

The Athletics summoned Barnett from Triple-A Las Vegas last Friday to make his first appearance for the big club in more than a month, and the 25-year-old right-hander languished in a 5-3 loss to the Guardians. He took a no-decision in the start, coughing up three runs on seven hits and four walks in 3.1 innings to bring his ERA and WHIP up to 7.16 and 1.75, respectively, over his 19 appearances for the Athletics on the season. Despite the poor showing, Barnett will receive one last turn through the rotation as the Athletics kick off a four-game set versus Houston to close out the campaign.

The Angels recalled Martin from Triple-A Salt Lake on Thursday.

Martin returns to the big leagues after being down in Triple-A since his demotion Aug. 30, where the right hander posted 7.88 ERA and 1.38 WHIP across 8.0 innings through four games. He's getting brought up as a corresponding move with Ben Joyce (shoulder) getting placed on the injured list.

Montgomery earned the save in Thursday's 3-1 win over the Mets, striking out one in a perfect ninth inning.

With Jacob Latz unavailable after throwing 1.2 innings Wednesday, it was Montgomery who was called upon to close out the game Thursday. The southpaw was sharp, retiring the side on just eight pitches, as he logged his first save of the season and just the second in his major-league career. Since returning from the IL in August, Montgomery's posted a 4.63 ERA with a 1.03 WHIP and 17:6 K:BB over 23.1 innings.

The Angels placed Joyce on the 15-day injured list Thursday, retroactive to Sept. 21, due to right shoulder impingement.

With the injury, Joyce finishes the season with a 4.11 ERA, 1.11 WHIP, five saves and three blown saves in 15.1 innings across 16 games. The Angels recalled Trevor Martin from Triple-A Salt Lake in a corresponding move Thursday.

The Yankees recalled Hanner from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Thursday.

Hanner will return to the Bronx to replenish the Yankees' bullpen depth following Clarke Schmidt's (biceps) move to the IL. Although he boasts a 2.35 ERA in 57.1 frames at Triple-A, Hanner will almost certainly be limited to low-leverage work with the big club after giving up seven earned runs in 5.1 MLB innings.

The Yankees placed Schmidt on the 15-day injured list Thursday with right bicep neuritis, retroactive to Monday.

Schmidt's move to the injured list will officially rule him out for the AL Wild Card Series and the start of the ALDS, but there's a chance that the Yankees may shut the 30-year-old down for the season and focus on getting him ready for 2027. He appeared in just one regular-season game this year, allowing two hits and recording two strikeouts in two-thirds of an inning Sept. 16 against Minnesota. Bradley Hanner will come up to fill the open bullpen spot.

The Rays selected Woodford's contract from Triple-A Durham on Thursday, Ryan Bass of Rays.tv reports.

Woodford will provide some bullpen protection after the Rays' relief corps was needed for 4.1 innings in Wednesday's loss to the Yankees. He's collected a 7.18 ERA and 1.78 WHIP with 23 strikeouts across 26.1 innings in the big leagues this season between stops with the Brewers and Cubs.
