Barnett gave up a three-run home run to Lucas Spence and a solo shot to Isaac Paredes. The 25-year-old Barnett was most effective as a reliever this year while struggling in a starting role later in the campaign. He will likely end 2026 with a 7.02 ERA, 1.66 WHIP and 50:30 K:BB over 50 innings across 20 games (six starts). He'll have minimal fantasy appeal as long as he's calling Sutter Health Park his home field in the majors.

Athletics' Mason Barnett: Handed another start
Barnett will start Thursday's game against the Astros in Sacramento.
The Athletics summoned Barnett from Triple-A Las Vegas last Friday to make his first appearance for the big club in more than a month, and the 25-year-old right-hander languished in a 5-3 loss to the Guardians. He took a no-decision in the start, coughing up three runs on seven hits and four walks in 3.1 innings to bring his ERA and WHIP up to 7.16 and 1.75, respectively, over his 19 appearances for the Athletics on the season. Despite the poor showing, Barnett will receive one last turn through the rotation as the Athletics kick off a four-game set versus Houston to close out the campaign.

Barnett did not factor into Friday's decision against Cleveland, allowing three runs on seven hits and four walks while striking out four across 3.1 innings.
Barnett was promoted from Triple-A Las Vegas ahead of Friday's start, his fifth of the season and 10th of his major-league career. He kept the Guardians off the board through the first three innings but proceeded to allow four of the first five batters he faced in the fourth on base, resulting in three runs scored for Cleveland. Barnett has allowed at least three earned runs in six of his last seven major-league outings, and he has a 7.16 ERA and 1.75 WHIP across 44 innings this season. Assuming he stays with the big club, Barnett is lined up to face the Astros at home next weekend.

Athletics' Mason Barnett: Burned by the long ball Tuesday
Barnett (1-3) took the loss Tuesday against the Rays, allowing six runs (five earned) on five hits and three walks while failing to record a strikeout over four innings.
Barnett surrendered a two-run homer to Junior Caminero in the first inning before running into more trouble in the fourth, when Taylor Walls and Yandy Diaz launched back-to-back bombs. The right-hander recorded just one whiff on 67 pitches as he failed to punch out a single hitter. He has now allowed three home runs in consecutive outings and has surrendered 14 runs (13 earned) across 13.1 innings while working as a traditional starter over his last three appearances. Barnett owns a 6.50 ERA, 1.44 WHIP and 35:18 K:BB across 36 innings this season. He may need to show out in his next scheduled outing against a weak Kansas City offense if he wants to make a case to remain in the rotation.

Barnett was inefficient Thursday, landing just 47 of his 82 pitches for strikes, and he served up three home runs in hitter-friendly Cincinnati. The right-hander did fan a season-high seven, but he'll likely need to do a better job of keeping the ball in the yard if he wants to remain in the Athletics' rotation. Barnett appears close to being able to handle a traditional starter's workload after initially working in bulk relief upon his promotion in late July, but his 5.56 ERA, 1.38 WHIP and 36:17 K:BB over 34 innings may not leave him with much streaming appeal against the Rays his next time out.

Athletics' Mason Barnett: Garnering another start
Athletics manager Mark Kotsay said Sunday that Barnett will maintain his spot in the rotation during the upcoming week, Jason Burke of Roundtable.io reports.
After coming up from Triple-A Las Vegas on July 22, Barnett entered the rotation last weekend and tossed 3.1 innings of bulk relief in a 2-0 loss to the Twins. He then handled a traditional starting role for his next appearance Thursday, limiting a red-hot Red Sox squad to three runs on four hits and one walk while striking out six over five innings. He's earned himself a more permanent stay in the rotation, even though the Athletics will get J.T. Ginn (finger) back from the 15-day injured list Tuesday. Kotsay confirmed that the Athletics won't be moving to a five-man rotation, so one of Jeffrey Springs, Jack Perkins, Jacob Lopez and Gage Jump would appear to be in line to lose his starting role.

After working in bulk relief in his previous appearance, Barnett made his first start of the season Thursday. He got through four scoreless frames before fading in the fifth, when the Red Sox tagged him for three runs on three hits. That ended up being his final frame, and he threw 73 total pitches, his highest mark in a big-league game so far this season. Barnett may not be ready for a completely full workload yet, and he could return to the bullpen when J.T. Ginn (finger) is activated from the IL, which could happen early next week.

Initial reports suggested Barnett would start Saturday's contest, but that role ultimately went to Brady Basso, who covered the first two frames. Barnett still ended up logging the longest outing among A's pitchers, tossing 54 pitches (35 strikes) across his 3.1 innings. The right-hander got through his first three frames unscathed, but he surrendered two runs in the sixth, which accounted for all of the scoring in the game. It remains to be seen how Barnett will be deployed moving forward, but he could be needed to make a few starts (or bulk-relief appearances) with J.T. Ginn (finger blister) currently on the 15-day IL.

The Athletics called Barnett up from Triple-A Las Vegas on Wednesday, and after he wasn't needed in relief over the past three days, he'll end up slotting into the rotation as a replacement for the injured J.T. Ginn (finger). Barnett was a full-time member of the rotation at Las Vegas prior to his call-up, but all 13 of his appearances with the Athletics in 2026 have come out of the bullpen. As Burke notes, Barnett was limited to 38 pitches in his most recent start for Las Vegas on July 18, so the right-hander will likely be in store for a restricted workload in Saturday's outing.
