Yankees' Clarke Schmidt: Placed on IL
The Yankees placed Schmidt on the 15-day injured list Thursday with right bicep neuritis, retroactive to Monday.
Schmidt's move to the injured list will officially rule him out for the AL Wild Card Series and the start of the ALDS, but there's a chance that the Yankees may shut the 30-year-old down for the season and focus on getting him ready for 2027. He appeared in just one regular-season game this year, allowing two hits and recording two strikeouts in two-thirds of an inning Sept. 16 against Minnesota. Yankees' Clarke Schmidt: May be shut down
Schmidt could be shut down for the season if he's unable to pitch Thursday, MLB.com reports.
After completing his recovery from an internal brace procedure he underwent in July of 2025, Schmidt returned to the Yankees and pitched a scoreless two-thirds of an inning against Minnesota on Sept. 16. However, he suffered a biceps injury while warming up in the bullpen four days later. The right-hander reportedly had a "better" day Tuesday, but it's still unclear if he'll be able to return before the end of the season. Should Schmidt not be feeling well enough to pitch by Thursday, the Yankees may decide that he's better off being held out of pitching until 2027.

Yankees' Clarke Schmidt: Managing bicep issue
Manager Aaron Boone said Tuesday that Schmidt underwent testing on his right biceps and is "in a pretty good spot," Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports.

Schmidt displayed some obvious rust in his first game action since he underwent an internal brace procedure on his right elbow last July. The veteran hurler threw 20 pitches in the outing. During his ramp-up, Schmidt's fastball has been hovering around 95 mph, per Chris Kirschner of The Athletic, which is about where it was pre-surgery. Schmidt figures to need more rehab appearances before he rejoins the Yankees, but he won't need to build up to a starter's workload since he'll be working out of the bullpen.

Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Sunday that Schmidt (elbow) will be preparing to return from the 60-day injured list as a reliever, Gary Phillips of the New York Daily News reports. "That can always change as the weeks and month unfolds, just depending," Boone said, regarding Schmidt's potential role. "But that's kind of how we're looking at."
