Capitals' Lynden Lakovic: Likely to make jump to AHL
Lakovic is expected to make the jump to the AHL level for the 2026-27 campaign, Sammi Silber of The Hockey News reports.
Lakovic was a first-round pick by the Capitals in 2025, and he was loaned to WHL Moose Jaw last year. He made 22 regular-season appearances for the club, recording 18 goals, 11 assists and eight PIM before he sustained a shoulder injury that required season-ending surgery. However, he's expected to be ready for training camp in the fall and has been able to add size and muscle over the past few months. The 19-year-old should spend time with the Capitals during training camp before presumably spending most of the regular season with AHL Hershey. If he makes enough of an impact with the Bears, it's possible he could make his NHL debut at some point during the 2026-27 campaign.

Capitals' Ivan Miroshnichenko: Could push for NHL role once again
Miroshnichenko could push for playing time in the NHL once again during the 2026-27 season, Tony Ferrari of The Hockey News reports.
Miroshnichenko has had brief stints in the NHL across the past three seasons, totaling five goals, eight assists, 97 hits, 19 blocked shots and eight PIM while averaging 10:32 of ice time across 52 regular-season appearances. He's made the most of regular playing time with AHL Hershey, most recently recording 14 goals, 20 assists and 47 PIM over 41 regular-season appearances last year. If the 22-year-old can showcase his skill set during training camp, he could make the case for more of a full-time role with the Capitals during the 2026-27 season.

Capitals' Ilya Protas: Likely to take on full-time role
Protas will likely take on a full-time role for the Capitals during the 2026-27 campaign, Tony Ferrari of The Hockey News reports.
Protas was productive for AHL Hershey last year, recording 29 goals, 37 assists and 40 PIM across 69 regular-season appearances. He was rewarded with a late-season call-up, and he generated a goal, three assists, two blocked shots and two PIM while averaging 15:54 of ice time across four appearances with the Capitals, marking his first taste of NHL action. Following his brief stint with Washington last year, Protas should have the opportunity to carve out regular playing time in the NHL during the 2026-27 campaign.

Capitals' Cole Hutson: Poised for role in 2026-27 campaign
Hutson is expected to step into the lineup for the Capitals during the 2026-27 campaign, Tony Ferrari of The Hockey News reports.
Hutson was a second-round pick by the Capitals in 2024, and he made his NHL debut late in the 2025-26 campaign. Across 14 regular-season appearances with Washington, he racked up three goals, seven assists, 16 hits, eight PIM and six blocked shots while averaging 17:27 of ice time. He'll retain his rookie status during the 2026-27 season and should have the opportunity to carve out regular playing time at the NHL level.

Capitals' Oliver Suvanto: Inks entry-level deal
Suvanto signed a three-year, entry-level contract with Washington on Tuesday.
Suvanto had two goals and 11 points in 48 regular-season games for Tappara of Finland's Liiga in 2025-26. The Capitals selected the 17-year-old forward with the No. 18 overall pick in the 2026 NHL Entry Draft. He will return to Tappara for the 2026-27 campaign.

Capitals' Tyler Kopff: Acquired in trade
Washington acquired Kopff from Buffalo on Monday in exchange for Zac Funk.
Kopff had one goal, five points and 23 PIM across 30 regular-season games for AHL Rochester in 2025-26. He also picked up two goals and four assists in 10 appearances for ECHL Jacksonville during the 2025-26 regular season. The 23-year-old forward hasn't made his NHL debut yet. He will probably spend most, if not all, of the 2026-27 campaign in the minors.

Capitals' Jacob MacDonald: Inks one-year contract
MacDonald signed a one-year, two-way contract with Washington on Sunday.
During the 2025-26 campaign with AHL Colorado, MacDonald had four goals and 12 points in 17 regular-season games before adding one goal and one assist in 17 playoff outings. He will compete for a depth role with Washington during training camp, but he will probably begin 2026-27 in the minors with AHL Hershey.

Capitals' Alex Ovechkin: Returning to Washington for 2026-27
Ovechkin signed a one-year, $4.25 million contract with the Capitals on Thursday.
There was uncertainty during the offseason as to whether Ovechkin would continue his NHL career during the 2026-27 campaign, but he'll remain with the Capitals for at least one more season. He appeared in all 82 regular-season games with Washington last year, racking up 32 goals, 32 assists, 134 hits, 26 PIM and 16 blocked shots while averaging 17:27 of ice time. The NHL's all-time leader in goals has appeared in at least 65 regular-season games in five consecutive seasons, and he should remain a reliable contributor during his age-41 season as long as he can remain healthy.

Capitals' Josh Dunne: Links up with Washington
Dunne signed a one-year, $850,000 contract with the Capitals on Wednesday, Tom Gulitti of NHL.com reports.
Dunne will compete for a bottom-six role with the Capitals during training camp. The 27-year-old forward's contract is a one-way deal, which gives him some financial security even if he ends up getting waived prior to the start of the campaign. With the Sabres last year, he produced just four points, along with 29 shots on net, 38 PIM and 40 hits, over 34 regular-season contests.

Capitals' Boone Jenner: Inks four-year contract
Jenner signed a four-year, $23 million contract with the Capitals on Wednesday, per Stephen Whyno of the Associated Press.
Jenner had 13 goals and 38 points in 67 outings with the Blue Jackets in 2025-26. He has exceeded the 30-point mark in four of his past five campaigns. The 33-year-old will probably serve in a middle-six capacity with Washington next season.

Capitals' Vincent Desharnais: Agrees to four-year contract
Desharnais signed a four-year, $16.8 million contract with the Capitals on Wednesday.
Desharnais had a goal, seven points, 68 PIM, 103 hits and 83 blocks in 53 outings with San Jose in 2025-26. The 30-year-old blueliner is likely to serve primarily on the third pairing over the life of this deal.

Capitals' Justin Holl: Signs with Washington
Holl signed a one-year, $900,000 contract with the Capitals on Wednesday, David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period reports.
Holl spent most of the 2025-26 campaign in the minors, making 41 regular-season appearances for AHL Grand Rapids and recording two goals, 12 assists and 10 PIM. However, he had averaged 63.8 regular-season NHL appearances across the previous six campaigns, and he'll presumably have an opportunity to compete for an NHL role with his new team.

Capitals' Jonny Brodzinski: Lands one-year deal with Washington
Brodzinski signed a one-year, $850,000 contract with the Capitals on Wednesday, Peter Baugh of The Athletic reports.
Brodzinski made at least 50 regular-season appearances for the Rangers in each of the past three campaigns. He recorded six goals, 10 assists, 47 hits, 19 blocked shots and 12 PIM while averaging 11:10 of ice time across 55 outings in 2025-26. He will compete for a depth role with the Capitals during training camp.

Capitals' Oliver Suvanto: Big two-way center drafted 18th
Suvanto was the 18th overall pick by Washington in the 2026 NHL Entry Draft on Friday.
Suvanto is one of the most NHL-ready players in the draft class. His defensive game is fantastic already, and he's excellent deep in his own zone supporting his own defenders on exits. He's strong on the cycle and uses his big frame well in puck protection. Suvanto's skating needs work to get to NHL level, and his feet will likely always be heavy. And his offensive upside is limited. But high-floor, low-risk players have long NHL careers. Suvanto's game already looks a lot like Anton Lundell's, minus the pre-draft offensive output. That's Suvanto's ceiling.

Capitals' Alex Tuch: Involved in sign-and-trade
Tuch was acquired by Washington from Buffalo on Wednesday in a sign-and-trade that provides him with an eight-year, $84 million contract, per Pierre LeBrun of TSN. The Sabres received David Kampf and a third-round pick in 2027.
Tuch was eligible to become an unrestricted free agent and is getting a huge raise compared to his previous seven-year, $33.25 million deal. However, the pay bump isn't shocking. He's surpassed the 30-goal and 65-point milestones in three of the past four regular seasons, including his 33 goals and 66 points in 79 regular-season appearances in 2025-26. His massive contract is a combination of that jump in production over the past several years, a rising salary cap and a weak UFA market. Tuch is 30 years old, so the final years of this deal might be rough, but Washington's top six is looking a lot better after inking Tuch and acquiring Jordan Kyrou (knee) from St. Louis on Tuesday.

Capitals' Jordan Kyrou: Dealt to D.C.
Kyrou (knee) was traded to the Capitals from St. Louis on Tuesday in exchange for Connor McMichael, Milton Gastrin and the 16th overall pick in the 2026 NHL Draft.
After Kyrou was one of the names that headlined rumors at the 2026 trade deadline, he'll head to the nation's capital to play for Washington. The 28-year-old winger has put together a strong career thus far, scoring 168 goals and totaling 378 points across 488 regular-season games with the St. Louis Blues. While he took a small step back in production during the 2025-26 campaign with 46 points in 72 outings, he also averaged just 15:44 of ice time, which was his lowest level since 2020-21. It wouldn't be surprising for Washington to give him responsibilities more in line with his average of 17:56 across three regular seasons from 2022-23 through 2024-25. Despite needing a knee surgery in April, he's a prime bounce-back candidate for the upcoming season.
