Top Capitals News

  • Capitals' Josh Dunne: Links up with Washington

Dunne signed a one-year, $850,000 contract with the Capitals on Wednesday, Tom Gulitti of NHL.com reports.

Dunne will compete for a bottom-six role with the Capitals during training camp. The 27-year-old forward's contract is a one-way deal, which gives him some financial security even if he ends up getting waived prior to the start of the campaign. With the Sabres last year, he produced just four points, along with 29 shots on net, 38 PIM and 40 hits, over 34 regular-season contests.

  • Capitals' Boone Jenner: Inks four-year contract

Jenner signed a four-year, $23 million contract with the Capitals on Wednesday, per Stephen Whyno of the Associated Press.

Jenner had 13 goals and 38 points in 67 outings with the Blue Jackets in 2025-26. He has exceeded the 30-point mark in four of his past five campaigns. The 33-year-old will probably serve in a middle-six capacity with Washington next season.

  • Capitals' Vincent Desharnais: Agrees to four-year contract

Desharnais signed a four-year, $16.8 million contract with the Capitals on Wednesday.

Desharnais had a goal, seven points, 68 PIM, 103 hits and 83 blocks in 53 outings with San Jose in 2025-26. The 30-year-old blueliner is likely to serve primarily on the third pairing over the life of this deal.

  • Capitals' Justin Holl: Signs with Washington

Holl signed a one-year, $900,000 contract with the Capitals on Wednesday, David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period reports.

Holl spent most of the 2025-26 campaign in the minors, making 41 regular-season appearances for AHL Grand Rapids and recording two goals, 12 assists and 10 PIM. However, he had averaged 63.8 regular-season NHL appearances across the previous six campaigns, and he'll presumably have an opportunity to compete for an NHL role with his new team.

  • Capitals' Jonny Brodzinski: Lands one-year deal with Washington

Brodzinski signed a one-year, $850,000 contract with the Capitals on Wednesday, Peter Baugh of The Athletic reports.

Brodzinski made at least 50 regular-season appearances for the Rangers in each of the past three campaigns. He recorded six goals, 10 assists, 47 hits, 19 blocked shots and 12 PIM while averaging 11:10 of ice time across 55 outings in 2025-26. He will compete for a depth role with the Capitals during training camp.

  • Capitals' Oliver Suvanto: Big two-way center drafted 18th

Suvanto was the 18th overall pick by Washington in the 2026 NHL Entry Draft on Friday.

Suvanto is one of the most NHL-ready players in the draft class. His defensive game is fantastic already, and he's excellent deep in his own zone supporting his own defenders on exits. He's strong on the cycle and uses his big frame well in puck protection. Suvanto's skating needs work to get to NHL level, and his feet will likely always be heavy. And his offensive upside is limited. But high-floor, low-risk players have long NHL careers. Suvanto's game already looks a lot like Anton Lundell's, minus the pre-draft offensive output. That's Suvanto's ceiling.

  • Capitals' Alex Tuch: Involved in sign-and-trade

Tuch was acquired by Washington from Buffalo on Wednesday in a sign-and-trade that provides him with an eight-year, $84 million contract, per Pierre LeBrun of TSN. The Sabres received David Kampf and a third-round pick in 2027.

Tuch was eligible to become an unrestricted free agent and is getting a huge raise compared to his previous seven-year, $33.25 million deal. However, the pay bump isn't shocking. He's surpassed the 30-goal and 65-point milestones in three of the past four regular seasons, including his 33 goals and 66 points in 79 regular-season appearances in 2025-26. His massive contract is a combination of that jump in production over the past several years, a rising salary cap and a weak UFA market. Tuch is 30 years old, so the final years of this deal might be rough, but Washington's top six is looking a lot better after inking Tuch and acquiring Jordan Kyrou (knee) from St. Louis on Tuesday.

  • Capitals' Jordan Kyrou: Dealt to D.C.

Kyrou (knee) was traded to the Capitals from St. Louis on Tuesday in exchange for Connor McMichael, Milton Gastrin and the 16th overall pick in the 2026 NHL Draft.

After Kyrou was one of the names that headlined rumors at the 2026 trade deadline, he'll head to the nation's capital to play for Washington. The 28-year-old winger has put together a strong career thus far, scoring 168 goals and totaling 378 points across 488 regular-season games with the St. Louis Blues. While he took a small step back in production during the 2025-26 campaign with 46 points in 72 outings, he also averaged just 15:44 of ice time, which was his lowest level since 2020-21. It wouldn't be surprising for Washington to give him responsibilities more in line with his average of 17:56 across three regular seasons from 2022-23 through 2024-25. Despite needing a knee surgery in April, he's a prime bounce-back candidate for the upcoming season.

  • Capitals' Timothy Liljegren: Secures two-year deal

Liljegren agreed to terms on a two-year, $6.5 million contract with Washington on Wednesday.

Liljegren appeared in just four regular-season games for the Caps last year after he was acquired at the trade deadline from the Sharks. If the 27-year-old blueliner can get back to being the 20-point producer he was with the Maple Leafs, he'll be worth his new contract, though it's been two years since he put up those numbers.

  • Capitals' Petr Sikora: Pens entry-level deal

Sikora inked a three-year, entry-level contract with Washington on Thursday.

Sikora -- who was selected by the Caps in the sixth round of the 2024 NHL Draft -- registered three goals and six assists in 24 regular-season contests for Czech club Trinec Ocelari HC this year. The 20-year-old center hasn't shown a ton of offensive upside in three seasons playing in the Czech league, but his three-year deal offers some additional growth opportunities. It wouldn't be a shock to see Sikora make the jump to North America for the 2026-27 campaign, likely spending the year in the minors with AHL Hershey.

  • Capitals' Theodor Niederbach: Lands contract with Washington

Niederbach signed a one-year, two-way contract with the Capitals on Thursday.

Niederbach has yet to make his NHL debut, but he'll presumably have an opportunity to compete for a roster spot during training camp ahead of the 2026-27 campaign. Across 52 regular-season appearances in the SHL this year, he recorded 13 goals, 19 assists and 16 PIM.

  • Capitals' Terik Parascak: Sent to AHL

Parascak was reassigned to AHL Hershey on Monday.

Parascak has spent the season with WHL Prince George, where he recorded 33 goals, 46 assists and 53 PIM over 61 regular-season appearances and seven goals and 10 assists across 12 postseason matchups. He'll now have a chance to contribute for Hershey during the Calder Cup Playoffs.

  • Capitals' Andrew Cristall: Scores pair for Hershey

Cristall scored two goals in AHL Hershey's 5-2 win over Bridgeport in Game 2 on Thursday.

Cristall helped the Bears get through to the next round of the AHL playoffs. This was just his second postseason contest after he logged 20 goals and 60 points over all 72 regular-season games as a rookie for Hershey this year. Cristall has plenty of talent, and another strong campaign in 2026-27 could earn him his NHL debut.

  • Capitals' Rasmus Sandin: Undergoes knee surgery

Sandin underwent right knee surgery Tuesday for a torn ACL.

Sandin missed Washington's final two games of 2025-26 and finished the campaign with five goals, 29 points, 12 PIM, 88 hits and 127 blocks in 73 outings. He's expected to miss 6-9 months as a result of the injury, which puts his availability for the start of the 2026-27 campaign into question.

  • Capitals' Clay Stevenson: Posts shutout in AHL playoff opener

Stevenson recorded an 18-save shutout in AHL Hershey's 2-0 win over Bridgeport on Tuesday.

Stevenson didn't have a shutout in 37 regular-season appearances, but he was clutch when Hershey needed him the most. He went 18-13-3 with a 2.62 GAA and a .912 save percentage for the Bears this year. This was his first AHL postseason shutout in four outings.
