Top Cubs News

  • Cubs' Michael Busch: Extends on-base streak

Busch went 0-for-3 with two strikeouts and a walk during the Cubs' 4-1 loss to Atlanta on Wednesday.

It looked like Busch's 13-game on-base streak was coming to an end Wednesday, but he managed to extend it after drawing a walk in the ninth inning. During his on-base streak, Busch has gone 13-for-44 (.295) with one steal, one home run, 12 RBI and a 15:12 BB:K.

  • Cubs' Shota Imanaga: Tough-luck loss vs. Atlanta

Imanaga (4-3) took the loss against Atlanta on Wednesday, allowing two runs on five hits while striking out six across seven innings. He did not issue a walk.

Drake Baldwin smacked a solo home run in the fourth inning, which was the only run Imanaga gave up through seven innings. Imanaga returned to the mound for the eighth but was pulled after giving up an infield single, and he was tagged for another run after Phil Maton served up an RBI double to Mike Yastrzemski to give Atlanta the lead for good. All six of Imanaga's quality starts this year have come over his last seven outings, and his overall WHIP of 0.90 (across 54.1 innings) is tied for fourth best in the National League among qualified starters. His next start is slated to be a home matchup against the Brewers.

  • Cubs' Phil Maton: Scoreless streak snapped Wednesday

Maton allowed two runs on three hits across an inning of relief in Wednesday's 4-1 loss to Atlanta. He struck out one.

Maton entered the contest having rattled off five straight scoreless appearances, but that came to an end with a subpar outing against a tough Atlanta lineup. After posting an ugly 14.40 ERA through his first six appearances of the year, the veteran righty has been better with a 3.18 ERA in his last six games. Overall, Maton is still sitting with an 8.44 ERA, though he appears to be trending in the right direction even after Wednesday's setback.

  • Cubs' Michael Conforto: Heading back to bench Wednesday

Conforto is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game in Atlanta.

Conforto will hit the bench after he had started at designated hitter in four of the Cubs' past five games while going 6-for-14 with a home run, three doubles, three walks, three runs and two RBI during that stretch. Though he's been magnificent in a part-time role this season with a 1.065 OPS over 58 plate appearances, Conforto will likely find consistent reps hard to come by while Moises Ballesteros (.804 OPS) has been productive enough as the Cubs' primary DH and has more long-term investment from the organization.

  • Cubs' Liam Hendriks: Signed to minor-league deal

Hendriks signed a minor-league deal with the Cubs on Wednesday, Britt Ghiroli of The Athletic reports.

Hendriks will report to Triple-A Iowa after spending spring training with the Twins and failing to make the Opening Day roster. The 37-year-old last appeared in the major leagues with Boston in 2025, recording a 6.59 ERA over 13.2 innings.

  • Cubs' Alex Bregman: Blasts fourth homer Tuesday

Bregman went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Tuesday's 5-2 loss against Atlanta.

Bregman accounted for Chicago's only hit of the game, launching a solo homer off Grant Holmes in the fourth inning to get the Cubs on the board. The veteran has struggled badly at the plate in May, going just 6-for-39 (.154) with a 5:10 BB:K across 10 games. Bregman's now slashing .233/.326/.350 with four homers, five doubles, 14 RBI and 17 runs scored in 187 plate appearances.

  • Cubs' Colin Rea: Unravels in rough fifth inning

Rea (4-2) took the loss Tuesday against Atlanta, allowing five runs on seven hits and one walk while striking out one over 4.1 innings.

Rea cruised through the first four innings, limiting Atlanta to just three hits before everything fell apart in the fifth. Austin Riley opened the inning with a home run on the first pitch, and Mike Yastrzemski later added a two-run shot as Atlanta quickly flipped the game. Rea was pulled with two runners aboard, one of whom later came around to score. Prior to Tuesday, the veteran right-hander had allowed two or fewer runs in six of his eight starts, making this outing less alarming. Rea now owns a 4.68 ERA, 1.42 WHIP and 36:13 K:BB across 42.1 innings and is scheduled to face the White Sox next.

  • Cubs' Ben Brown: Awarded another start

Brown is slated to start Thursday's game against Atlanta at Truist Park.

Brown made his first 12 appearances of the season out of the Chicago bullpen, but he was called upon to start on short notice this past Friday in the wake of Matthew Boyd's (knee) surprise placement on the injured list. Though he wasn't fully stretched out for a starting role and was pitching on three days' rest, Brown delivered a strong outing on the road, holding the Rangers scoreless over four innings while striking out three and permitting no hits and one walk. While the Cubs are still likely to monitor his workload carefully in his second start, Brown should be able to build on the 46 pitches he tossed against Texas and reach the five innings he would need to qualify for a win. Another solid showing in Atlanta would likely help Brown solidify a rotation spot on a longer-term basis while neither Boyd nor Justin Steele (elbow) are close to returning from the IL.

  • Cubs' Corbin Martin: Sent outright to Triple-A

The Cubs outrighted Martin to Triple-A Iowa on Sunday.

Martin passed through waivers after being removed from the 40-man roster last week. He has the ability to decline the outright assignment and elect free agency, but it's unclear what Martin's plans are.

  • Cubs' Jameson Taillon: Tough-luck loss Sunday

Taillon (2-2) took the loss Sunday against the Rangers, allowing one run on four hits and two walks in 5.1 innings. He struck out four.

Taillon hardly deserved the loss in a positive showing Sunday, keeping the ball in the yard for the first time since his first start of the season. The 34-year-old right-hander continued to provide the Cubs with length as well, pitching at least five innings in his seventh consecutive outing. Taillon has a quality 3.94 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and 40:16 K:BB over 45.2 frames, and he should remain worth streaming in most fantasy formats with a matchup against the White Sox on tap for next weekend.

  • Cubs' Alex Bregman: Given day off

Bregman is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Rangers.

The third baseman will get a breather a day after the Cubs' 10-game winning streak came to an end. Bregman didn't contribute much to the club's heater by batting just .222 with seven runs and three RBI during the streak before going 0-for-4 with two strikeouts Saturday. Matt Shaw will handle the hot corner in Bregman's place.
