  • Reds' Brock Burke: Save situation unravels

Burke (5-5) was credited with the loss and a blown save to St. Louis on Thursday, when he allowed six unearned runs on two hits and three walks while striking out one.

Reds manager Terry Francona eschewed primary closer Emilio Pagan, instead bringing in Burke to close out a one-run lead to begin the top of the ninth inning. Burke was on the verge of closing it out, but an error on a routine fly led to six unearned runs. Pagan had thrown 19 pitches the previous day, and Francona may have considered the team's top closer as unavailable.

  • Reds' Emilio Pagan: Unused in save situation

Pagan was not used to close out a 5-4 lead in the ninth inning of Thursday's 10-9 loss to the Cardinals.

A reason why manager Terry Francona opted for Brock Burke instead of Pagan to close out a one-run lead was not immediately available. The top of the ninth turned into a nightmare, as an error on a routine flyball lead to six unearned runs for the Cardinals, who barley held on in the bottom of the inning. It's likely an issue where Francona wanted to avoid putting a workload on Pagan, who had thrown 19 pitches the previous day and would have pitched for a third time in four days. However, the closer has been used in similar circumstances since returning from an injury in early July.

  • Reds' Matt McLain: Finding power stroke

McLain went 1-for-4 with a grand slam, a walk and an additional run scored in Thursday's 10-9 loss to the Cardinals.

McLain matched a season high in RBI on Thursday, launching his first grand slam of the year. The infielder is enjoying a strong month in both the power and speed department, banging out four homers and four doubles while swiping four bags in 59 at-bats on the month so far. McLain is looking to close out the campaign on a high note, still slashing just .200/.298/.358 with 12 long balls, 17 doubles, 33 RBI and 15 steals over 385 plate appearances.

  • Reds' Brady Singer: Continues to provide length

Singer took a no-decision against the Cardinals on Thursday, allowing four runs on five hits and one walk in six innings. He struck out three.

Most of the damage came in the third inning, when Jordan Walker blasted a three-run home run. The 30-year-old right-hander hasn't been dominant lately, giving up at least three runs in six consecutive starts, but he's tossed at least six innings in seven of his last eight outings to supply steady length for the Reds. Singer is set to bring a 4.72 ERA, 1.42 WHIP and 107:43 K:BB over 131.2 innings into a soft road matchup with the lowly Giants.

  • Reds' Kent Emanuel: Staying in organization

The Reds outrighted Emanuel to Triple-A Louisville on Thursday.

Emanuel was removed from the Reds' 40-man roster immediately following a spot start earlier this week against the Cardinals. The lefty has gone unclaimed on waivers and accepted an outright assignment to Louisville, where he will provide rotation depth.

  • Reds' Eugenio Suarez: Getting breather Thursday

Suarez is absent from the lineup for Thursday's game versus the Cardinals.

Suarez will receive a routine day of rest after being in the lineup for each of the previous 16 contests. Elly De La Cruz is getting a designated-hitter day, while Ke'Bryan Hayes will handle third base for the Reds.

  • Reds' JJ Bleday: Dropping off in second half

Bleday went 0-for-3 in Wednesday's 5-4 win over the Cardinals.

Bleday was dropped to seventh in the order, the lowest spot he's hit out of as a starter since May 26. That the Reds were facing a left-hander may have played a role in manager Terry Francona's decision to slot the lefty-swining Bleday down in the order, but it may also have something to do with the outfielder's struggles in the second half. After posting an .842 OPS with 43 RBI over 67 games prior to the All-Star break, Bleday has slumped to a .167/.286/.296 slash line with four RBI over 32 contests since.

  • Reds' Sal Stewart: Launches 27th homer

Stewart went 1-for-3 with a three-run home run and a walk in Wednesday's 5-4 win over the Cardinals.

Stewart has now hit safely in 15 of his 18 outings in the month of August. JJ Wetherholt may be the favorite for the 2026 National League Rookie of the Year Award, but Stewart is making a strong case as well. He's slashing .259/.334/.476 with 27 homers, 24 doubles, 94 RBI and 12 stolen bases over 548 trips to the plate.

  • Reds' Emilio Pagan: Survives for save Wednesday

Pagan secured the save Wednesday against the Cardinals, allowing two runs on two hits and no walks in the ninth inning.

Pagan needed every bit of the three-run lead he was afforded, serving up a two-run home run to Jordan Walker. The veteran right-hander has established a fairly strong hold on the Reds' closer role, as Wednesday marked the first time he's been scored upon since July 19 in Colorado. He's turned his season around in a big way since coming off the injured list, producing a 2.35 ERA, 0.78 WHIP and 20:3 K:BB with 10 saves in as many opportunities over 15.1 innings since the start of July.

  • Reds' Chase Burns: Excellent campaign continues

Burns took a no-decision against the Cardinals on Wednesday, allowing two runs on six hits and two walks in five innings. He struck out eight.

Burns labored a bit Wednesday, needing 104 pitches to complete five innings, but he recorded at least six punchouts for a fourth consecutive start. The hard-throwing right-hander has been incredibly consistent to this point, working at least five frames in all 24 outings while conceding more than two runs just four times. Burns is set to take an outstanding 2.51 ERA, 1.11 WHIP and 159:48 K:BB over 136 innings into a soft matchup with the lowly Giants.

  • Reds' Ke'Bryan Hayes: Heading to bench Wednesday

Hayes is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Cardinals.

Hayes' .456 OPS places him last among the 367 major-league hitters who have logged at least 150 plate appearances this season, but his capable glove at third base, in addition to Reds' lack of appealing alternatives, have allowed him to maintain a fairly steady presence in the lineup. Though he'll be on the bench Wednesday, Hayes started in four of the previous five games.

  • Reds' Jose Trevino: Receiving another turn behind plate

Trevino will start at catcher and bat eighth in Wednesday's game against the Cardinals.

Trevino will crack the lineup for the second time in three games, and though he doesn't project to unseat Tyler Stephenson as the Reds' No. 1 backstop anytime soon, he could see a slight uptick in playing time while Cincinnati carries a third catcher on the roster (Will Banfield). The presence of Banfield will allow Trevino and Stephenson to be a part of the same lineup for the first time all season, as Stephenson will serve as the designated hitter Wednesday.

  • Reds' Spencer Steer: Follow-up exam on wrist this weekend

Steer will have a follow-up exam on his injured right wrist this weekend, Charlie Goldsmith of Fox 19 Now Cincinnati reports.

Recovering from a partial tear of the tendon sheath in his wrist, Steer could be cleared to ramp up baseball activities if he receives good news during his exam. He remains without a clear timeline to return from the 10-day injured list, but more clarity on that front should come after this weekend.

  • Reds' Tony Santillan: Slated for activation Friday

The Reds are expected to activate Santillan (oblique) from the 15-day injured list Friday, Charlie Goldsmith of Fox 19 Now Cincinnati reports.

Santillan has retired all nine batters he's faced on his rehab assignment, five of them via strikeout. He's been shelved since late June with an oblique strain, but his return to the Cincinnati bullpen is imminent.

  • Reds' Hector Rodriguez: Not starting versus lefty

Rodriguez is absent from the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Cardinals.

The left-handed-hitting Rodriguez had started in right field the last two games versus righties, but he'll begin Wednesday's contest on the bench as St. Louis sends southpaw Matthew Liberatore to the bump. Michael Toglia will play right field for the Reds.

... See More ... See Less
  • Reds' Michael Toglia: Getting steady playing time

Toglia will start in right field and bat sixth in Wednesday's contest against the Cardinals.

Toglia will be making his second start in right field and sixth start in 10 games since being called up from Triple-A Louisville. He's gone just 3-for-19 with a 2:8 BB:K thus far. Lefty swinger Hector Rodriguez is likely to see most of the reps in right field against right-handed pitching, but the switch-hitting Toglia could settle into the short side of a platoon in right field while also seeing occasional starts at other positions.
