Diamondbacks' Brandon Pfaadt: Lit up for six runs in loss

Pfaadt (7-3) allowed six runs on 10 hits and a hit batsman while striking out seven and walking none over 6.2 innings, taking the loss versus the Rangers on Saturday.
Pfaadt again provided good length, but he wasn't able to collect a third straight quality start. He has given up 20 runs over 31.1 innings across his last five starts, going winless in that stretch. For the season, the right-hander is at a 3.77 ERA, 1.17 WHIP and 84:29 K:BB through 124 innings over 27 games (17 starts). Pfaadt is projected to make his next start at home versus the Yankees.
The Diamondbacks recalled Locklear from Triple-A Reno and placed him on the 60-day injured list Saturday due to a fractured right thumb.
Locklear was dispatched to Triple-A last month but was summoned back to the big leagues Saturday so the team could place him on the 60-day IL to open a spot on the 40-man roster for Pavin Smith. The move effectively ends Locklear's season after slashing .278/.357/.444 with one home run, six RBI, eight runs scored, one stolen base and a 4:9 BB:K across 42 plate appearances in the majors. He posted an .871 OPS with 10 homers and 46 RBI at Reno.

Diamondbacks' Adrian Del Castillo: Sent back to minors

The Diamondbacks optioned Del Castillo to Triple-A Reno on Saturday.
Del Castillo was summoned from Reno last weekend but will head back in favor of Pavin Smith, whose contract was selected in a corresponding move. Del Castillo has slashed .196/.249/.313 with five home runs, 24 RBI, 18 runs scored, one stolen base and a 13:55 BB:K across 195 trips to the plate at the big-league level this season.

Diamondbacks' Pavin Smith: Back in big leagues

The Diamondbacks selected Smith's contract from Triple-A Reno on Saturday.
Smith opened the season as the Diamondbacks' main designated hitter against right-handed pitching, but he slashed just .141/.236/.192 with two extra-base hits and six RBI across 89 plate appearances before being DFA'd in early July. With Reno, Smith hit .301 with a .925 OPS across 181 trips to the plate to earn another chance at the big-league level.
Diamondbacks' Ryne Nelson: Needs one more rehab outing

Nelson (elbow) will make one more rehab appearance at Triple-A Reno before rejoining the Diamondbacks, MLB.com reports.
Nelson has thrown a pair of scoreless innings and struck out four over his first two rehab outings. The right-hander will pitch out of the bullpen as Arizona competes for a playoff spot.
Martinez struck out three over a perfect sixth inning in Friday's 9-1 win over the Rangers.
Martinez needed just nine pitches to strike out Wyatt Langford, Evan Carter and Jake Burger. Five of those nine pitches resulted in swinging strikes. Martinez has yet to allow an earned run over eight appearances since being activated from the 60-day injured list. He's struck out 11, walked five and allowed two hits over 7.2 innings.

The Diamondbacks scored all of their runs in the fourth and fifth innings, and Marte doubled home runs in both frames. Vargas ignited a dormant offense in the fifth inning when the Diamondbacks scored four times. His ground-rule double produced the first of those four runs, and then Arizona went on to score another five times the following inning. It was his fifth consecutive start, four of which came at first base, as he and Tim Tawa share the position. Vargas is 6-for-20 (.300) over his five-start run.

Kelly needed 80 pitches (48 strikes) to get through this start, with Joc Pederson's RBI double ending the right-hander's outing. The short outing kept Kelly from a third straight quality start. The 37-year-old has pitched to a 4.97 ERA, 1.46 WHIP and 102:67 K:BB across 152 innings over 27 starts this season. Kelly's next start is tentatively projected to come at home versus the Yankees, but he could be moved up to face the Marlins instead if the Diamondbacks opt to piggyback Zac Gallen and Michael Soroka again.

Soroka threw 34 of 58 pitches for strikes, but he was tagged for a three-run home run by Bobby Witt in the fifth inning, which was the difference in the game. The right-hander was more efficient than Zac Gallen, who started the game and threw 68 pitches (42 strikes). Soroka has a 3.53 ERA, 1.16 WHIP and 95:25 K:BB across 99.1 innings this season. Arizona's pitching plans are not yet clear for next week, but considering his pitch count, it's possible the 29-year-old work in a piggyback again if the team opts not to expand its rotation to six starters.
