The Cubs optioned Garrett to Triple-A Iowa on Saturday, Vinnie Duber of the Chicago Sun-Times reports.
Garrett was called up from Iowa on Thursday, but he'll now be sent back down to Triple-A without making an appearance for the Cubs. His roster spot will be filled by Clay Holmes (fibula), who returns from the injured list to start Saturday's game against Kansas City.

Acquired from the Marlins at the trade deadline, Garrett's role with the Cubs for now appears to be as a long-relief option. The left-hander has been tagged for seven runs with a 5:8 K:BB over 4.1 innings in the majors this season, but he's collected a 2.90 ERA and 83:29 K:BB covering 77.2 frames in 2026 at the Triple-A level.
The Cubs acquired Garrett from the Marlins on Monday in exchange for first baseman Jonathon Long and right-hander Jace Beck, Meghan Montemurro of the Chicago Tribune reports.
Garrett becomes the second starting pitcher the Cubs have acquired in the less than 24 hours, after Chicago previously swung a deal for Kevin Gausman on Sunday. Though Gausman will immediately settle into a starting role with the Cubs, Garrett will be optioned to Triple-A Iowa to begin his time in the organization. After missing the entire 2025 campaign while recovering from UCL revision surgery with an internal brace, Garrett has enjoyed sound health this season but wasn't able to carve out a role at the big-league level with the Marlins. The 28-year-old southpaw made just two appearances in Miami and had instead been making regular starts at Triple-A Jacksonville, where he submitted a 2.98 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and 88:32 K:BB across 81.2 innings.

After being called up from Jacksonville on May 14 to replace the injured Robby Snelling (elbow) in the rotation, Garrett didn't perform well enough to earn a longer-term stay with the big club. Between his starts against Minnesota and Atlanta, Garrett covered just 4.1 innings and allowed seven earned runs while walking more batters (eight) than he struck out (five). The Marlins have yet to announce a new fifth starter, but Thomas White was scratched from his scheduled outing with Jacksonville on Wednesday and appears to be the leading candidate to enter the big-league rotation.

The decision to send Garrett down comes after he gave up two earned runs on three hits and three walks while striking out two batters across three innings during his start against Atlanta on Tuesday. It was an improvement over his season debut, during which he surrendered five earned runs while recording just four outs, but a second consecutive poor outing will force the Marlins to send the 28-year-old lefty back to the minors to right the ship. It's unknown who will take Garrett's place in Miami's rotation.

Making his Marlins season debut after starting the year with Triple-A Jacksonville, Garrett didn't fare well in his first major-league start since 2024. Control was a major issue -- the left-hander tossed only 30 of his 64 pitches for strikes -- but Garrett's day could have been even worse had he not struck out Luke Keaschall to escape a bases-loaded jam in the first inning. With Robby Snelling (elbow) on the injured list, Garrett is tentatively lined up to face Atlanta in his next outing but doesn't shape up as an appealing fantasy option.

Garrett will start Thursday's game versus the Twins in place of the injured Robby Snelling (elbow) in what will be his first outing with the big club this season. The left-hander has been fantastic for Jacksonville in the early going, collecting a 2.30 ERA, 0.80 WHIP and 32:15 K:BB in 31.1 innings. With Snelling facing a potentially lengthy absence, Garrett should have a spot in the Miami rotation nailed down indefinitely.
