  • Marlins' Braxton Garrett: Demoted to Triple-A

The Marlins optioned Garrett to Triple-A Jacksonville on Wednesday. After being called up from Jacksonville on May 14 to replace the injured Robby Snelling (elbow) in the rotation, Garrett didn't perform well enough to earn a longer-term stay with the big club. Between his starts against Minnesota and Atlanta, Garrett covered just 4.1 innings and allowed seven earned runs while walking more batters (eight) than he struck out (five). The Marlins have yet to announce a new fifth starter, but Thomas White was scratched from his scheduled outing with Jacksonville on Wednesday and appears to be the leading candidate to enter the big-league rotation.

  • Marlins' Braxton Garrett: Headed to Jacksonville

The Marlins will option Garrett to Triple-A Jacksonville on Wednesday, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports. The decision to send Garrett down comes after he gave up two earned runs on three hits and three walks while striking out two batters across three innings during his start against Atlanta on Tuesday. It was an improvement over his season debut, during which he surrendered five earned runs while recording just four outs, but a second consecutive poor outing will force the Marlins to send the 28-year-old lefty back to the minors to right the ship. It's unknown who will take Garrett's place in Miami's rotation.

  • Marlins' Braxton Garrett: Flops in season debut

Garrett (0-1) took the loss Thursday against the Twins, allowing five runs on four hits and five walks in 1.1 innings. He struck out three. Making his Marlins season debut after starting the year with Triple-A Jacksonville, Garrett didn't fare well in his first major-league start since 2024. Control was a major issue -- the left-hander tossed only 30 of his 64 pitches for strikes -- but Garrett's day could have been even worse had he not struck out Luke Keaschall to escape a bases-loaded jam in the first inning. With Robby Snelling (elbow) on the injured list, Garrett is tentatively lined up to face Atlanta in his next outing but doesn't shape up as an appealing fantasy option.

  • Marlins' Braxton Garrett: Recalled ahead of Thursday's start

The Marlins recalled Garrett from Triple-A Jacksonville on Thursday. Garrett will start Thursday's game versus the Twins in place of the injured Robby Snelling (elbow) in what will be his first outing with the big club this season. The left-hander has been fantastic for Jacksonville in the early going, collecting a 2.30 ERA, 0.80 WHIP and 32:15 K:BB in 31.1 innings. With Snelling facing a potentially lengthy absence, Garrett should have a spot in the Miami rotation nailed down indefinitely.

  • Marlins' Braxton Garrett: Poised to join big-league rotation

Marlins manager Clayton McCullough said that Garrett will be recalled from Triple-A Jacksonville to start the Marlins' series finale in Minnesota on Thursday, Kyle Sielaff of Marlins.tv reports. Garrett will be plugged into the Miami rotation as a replacement for lefty Robby Snelling (elbow), who was placed on the 15-day injured list after being diagnosed with a UCL sprain. After missing the entire 2025 season while recovering from UCL revision surgery with an internal brace, Garrett failed to break camp with the Marlins but has been a lights-out performer at Jacksonville to begin the season. Through six starts at Triple-A, Garrett has submitted a 2.30 ERA, 0.80 WHIP and 32:15 K:BB in 31.1 innings. With Snelling's elbow injury likely to keep him on the shelf beyond the 15-day minimum, Garrett should be in line for an extended run in the Miami rotation.

  • Marlins' Braxton Garrett: Takes regular turn at Triple-A

Garrett made his regularly scheduled start for Triple-A Jacksonville on Tuesday, giving up four runs (three earned) on four hits and three walks over five innings. He struck out six. Keeping the southpaw on turn at Triple-A all but rules him out for a call-up Friday to join the Marlins' rotation in place of Chris Paddack. Garrett will likely get his chance to face big-league hitters later this summer, but for now it's Robby Snelling who's in line for the promotion this weekend. Garrett sports a 2.30 ERA, 0.80 WHIP and 32:15 K:BB through 31.1 innings this season for Jacksonville.

  • Marlins' Braxton Garrett: Could enter Miami rotation

Garrett could be recalled from Triple-A Jacksonville to start Friday's game against the Nationals, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports. He would fill the spot vacated by Chris Paddack, who was designated for assignment Tuesday. Garrett missed all of the 2025 season while recovering from UCL surgery and failed to make the Opening Day roster this spring, but he's responded with a 1.71 ERA and 26:12 K:BB over 26.1 innings covering five starts with Jacksonville. Robby Snelling is also an option to take Paddack's spot, but Garrett might have the edge since he's already on the 40-man roster.

  • Marlins' Braxton Garrett: Sent to minors

The Marlins optioned Garrett to Triple-A Jacksonville on Friday. After being sidelined all of last season while recovering from elbow surgery, Garrett will begin 2026 in the minors. He gave up three runs with three strikeouts and three walks over four Grapefruit League innings. The left-hander will likely get a look in Miami's rotation at some point this season, but it'll be Janson Junk who begins the campaign as the No. 5 starter.

  • Marlins' Braxton Garrett: Not guaranteed rotation spot

Garrett may not begin the season in the Marlins' rotation, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports. The 28-year-old southpaw didn't pitch at all in 2025 while recovering from elbow surgery, and the Marlins may decide to be cautious with the final stages of his recovery, either by optioning him to Triple-A Jacksonville, or by placing him on the IL and giving him a rehab assignment to begin the season. Garrett's 6.75 ERA and 3:3 K:BB through four spring innings also don't make a strong case that he's ready to handle a regular turn in the big-league rotation. Janson Junk would likely fill the fifth starter role until Miami deems Garrett ready to make his return.

  • Marlins' Braxton Garrett: Sharp in Sunday's start

Garrett allowed one run on one hit and one walk over three innings in Sunday's Grapefruit League game against the Cardinals. He struck out two. The southpaw threw 23 of 37 pitches for strikes, but while his line in the box score was good, Garrett wasn't able to match the velocity he's been flashing during batting practice sessions in camp. He sat just 91-92 mph with his four-seam fastball against the Cards and topping out at 93.6 mph. That would still be a step up from what he was showing prior to UCL revision surgery in December 2024, however, as the pitch averaged just 90.7 mph in 2024 and 90.8 mph in 2023. After not seeing game action at all in 2025, Garrett has been healthy to begin spring training and remains a favorite to open the season in the Miami rotation.

  • Marlins' Braxton Garrett: Expected to be full-go in camp

Garrett (elbow) isn't expected to have any restrictions when spring training begins, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports. Garrett didn't pitch at all in 2025 while recovering from December 2024 elbow surgery that included an internal brace procedure. The 28-year-old southpaw had shown flashes of upside before that, including a shutout of the Diamondbacks in May 2024, and with the Marlins having traded Edward Cabrera and Ryan Weathers this offseason, the team is counting on Garrett to fill one of three openings in the rotation behind Sandy Alcantara and Eury Perez.

  • Marlins' Braxton Garrett: Avoids arbitration

The Marlins and Garrett (elbow) avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $1.53 million contract Thursday, Fish on First reports. Garrett will receive the same salary for a second straight year after he missed all of the 2025 season following UCL revision surgery with an internal brace on his left elbow. The southpaw is a little over a year removed from the operation and it's unclear whether he will be ready in time for Opening Day.

  • Marlins' Braxton Garrett: Begins throwing program

Garrett (elbow) played catch Monday for the first time since having UCL revision surgery with an internal brace on his left elbow in December, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports. Garrett took the first major step in what will be a lengthy rehab process. He will be sidelined for the entire 2025 season but could be ready in time for Opening Day in 2026 if he can avoid any setbacks in the coming months.

  • Marlins' Braxton Garrett: Settles with Miami

The Marlins and Garrett (elbow) avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year contract Thursday, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports. Garrett avoids an arbitration hearing in his first year of eligibility. He did not, however, avoid elbow surgery, as he underwent a UCL revision surgery with an internal brace last month that will sideline him for the entirety of the 2025 season.

  • Marlins' Braxton Garrett: Dealing with elbow impingement

Garrett was diagnosed with a left elbow impingement last week, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports. Garrett missed multiple months of action with a strained left forearm before suffering a setback with his elbow during a bullpen session in September. He is currently going through a throwing progression at the Marlins' spring training complex in Florida, and the setback isn't considered something that will jeopardize his availability for the start of spring training.

  • Marlins' Braxton Garrett: Suffers setback

Manager Skip Schumaker said Saturday that Garrett experienced discomfort in his elbow during his latest bullpen session, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports. Garrett has been on the injured list since June with a strained left forearm and recently made his third rehab appearance at Triple-A Jacksonville. However, his latest elbow setback may put a dent in his plans to return to Miami before the end of the season. The Marlins will take the lefty in for an MRI, the results of which will help determine whether he can pitch again in 2024.

  • Marlins' Braxton Garrett: Throws live BP

Garrett (forearm) threw a two innings of live batting practice Saturday, MLB.com reports. The southpaw was expected to toss around 35 pitches in the workout Saturday, though the Marlins haven't disclosed how Garrett came out of the throwing session. Garrett looks as though he'll have a chance to pitch again for the Marlins in 2024, but he may not have enough time to get fully stretched back out for a starting role. Whether he returns as a starter or reliever, Garrett will likely need to complete at least one or two minor-league rehab appearances before being activated from the 60-day injured list.

  • Marlins' Braxton Garrett: Resumes throwing program

Garrett (forearm) has began playing catch, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports. Garrett will finally resume a throwing program after being placed on the injured list June 23 with a strained left forearm. The 26-year-old was deemed asymptomatic last week but spent several days focusing on strengthening his forearm before starting to throw. Garrett still has several checkpoints to complete before being activated and shouldn't be expected back for several weeks.

  • Marlins' Braxton Garrett: Begins rehab process

Garrett is considered asymptomatic while he continues to rehab his strained left forearm at the Marlins' facility in Jupiter, Fla., MLB.com reports. Garrett -- who was placed on the injured list June 23 -- is focused on strengthening his forearm for now before he kicks off a throwing program. The southpaw still looks to be multiple weeks away from a return, and given their place in the standings, the 33-63 Marlins are in no hurry to bring Garrett back.

  • Marlins' Braxton Garrett: Placed on injured list

The Marlins placed Garrett on the 15-day injured list Sunday with a left forearm flexor strain. The Marlins announced Saturday that Garrett wouldn't start as scheduled Sunday against the Mariners after he reported soreness in his left elbow. After further examination, the team has uncovered a strain in his left forearm, which will cause him to miss a few extra turns through the rotation. Kyle Tyler was recalled from Triple-A Jacksonville in a corresponding move to start Sunday's contest.
