Rockies' Austin Gomber: Hit hard early
Gomber (1-5) took the loss Tuesday against Houston, allowing five runs on eight hits and no walks over 5.1 innings. He struck out four.
All five runs against Gomber came in the first inning, when he allowed four consecutive singles to open the frame as part of a six-hit inning that included a pair of stolen bases. However, the 30-year-old settled in after the nightmare first frame, allowing just two baserunners afterward before a Jake Meyers double prompted Colorado to remove Gomber after 89 pitches. Gomber has endured a rough June, yielding at least three runs in all five starts and completing only six innings once. He owns a 9.39 ERA with 15 strikeouts over 23.0 innings during the month. He's tentatively scheduled for a home start against Milwaukee early next week.

Despite the mediocre stat line, Gomber left the game with a lead before Tyler Kinley and Victor Vodnik unraveled in the ninth inning. The Twins got to Gomber early Wednesday, scoring five times in the first inning before the left-hander was charged with another three runs before recording an out in the fourth. Gomber's now surrendered 15 runs over just 11 innings in his last three starts after working to a 0.67 ERA in his previous four outings. Overall, the 30-year-old left-hander sports a 4.26 ERA with a 1.32 WHIP and 49:22 K:BB across 69.2 innings this year. Gomber (1-3) allowed three runs on five hits and three walks while striking out two over three innings, taking the loss versus the Dodgers on Sunday.
Gomber dealt with general arm soreness earlier in the week, which caused him to have a start skipped. It doesn't appear to be a lingering issue, but he struggled Sunday, allowing home runs to Mookie Betts and Freddie Freeman in the first inning. Gomber ended up needing 79 pitches (46 strikes) to get through three frames. He had posted a quality start in each his last four outings before Sunday's short start. General arm soreness caused Gomber to be scratched from his scheduled start Monday versus Cleveland, but he is now set to make his next outing during the weekend coming off plenty of rest. Rockies' Austin Gomber: Scratched from Monday's start
Gomber has been scratched from Monday's start against the Guardians due to general arm soreness, Patrick Saunders of The Denver Post reports.
Mmanager Bud Black implied that Gomber isn't dealing with an injury, and the decision to scratch the left-hander has more to do with the team wanting to hold him back for the team's upcoming series against the Dodgers this weekend. Anthony Molina will draw the start Monday for Colorado in what could be a bullpen day.

Gomber did not factor into the decision in a win over Oakland on Wednesday, allowing one run on five hits while striking out six over eight innings.
Gomber went 1-2-3 through Oakland's lineup in each of the first three innings before surrendering a solo homer to JJ Bleday in the bottom of the fourth. However, that would be the only run he'd allow while going eight innings for the first time this season. The lefty induced 12 whiffs on the night and didn't walk a batter for the first time in his last four starts. It also marked Gomber's fourth consecutive quality start, and he now carries a pristine 0.68 ERA in May.

Gomber (0-2) yielded four runs on six hits over seven innings Sunday, striking out two and taking a loss against the Astros.
While Sunday's contest wasn't at Coors Field, it certainly played like a regular home game for Gomber. Houston took him deep three times, though all were solo shots. On the bright side, he retired 11 of the last 12 batters he faced despite forcing only four swinging strikes on 79 pitches. Gomber will carry a 4.50 ERA into his next outing, which is lined up to be in Pittsburgh next weekend.
