  • Reds' Jeimer Candelario: Aiming for Sunday return

Candelario (hamstring) is on track to play Sunday against the Cardinals, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports.

Candelario hasn't played since Tuesday as he tends to hamstring tendinitis. However, he's set to make his return for the series finale Sunday and will avoid a stint on the IL. In his stead, Noelvi Marte should continue to start at third base while Spencer Steer handles first base work.

  • Reds' Jake Fraley: Expected to play Saturday

Fraley (calf) is expected to be back in the lineup Saturday at St. Louis, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports.

Fraley has missed two consecutive contests with a right calf contusion, but he's on track to return Saturday. Santiago Espinal has drawn the start at DH in Fraley's place.

  • Reds' Jeimer Candelario: Held out again Friday

Candelario (hamstring) remains out of the lineup for Friday's game in St. Louis.

It's the third straight day on the bench for Candelario, who has been dealing with hamstring tendinitis since last week. There are no indications to this point that he might require a trip to the 10-day injured list, so consider him day-to-day for now. Noelvi Marte and Spencer Steer are again handling the infield corners for the Reds on Friday.

  • Reds' Jake Fraley: Remaining out of lineup

Fraley (calf) is out of the lineup for Friday's game against the Cardinals.

With no MRI results reported yet for Fraley, he'll remain out of the lineup as Cincinnati opens up its series against St. Louis. Santiago Espinal will again start at designated hitter and bat sixth.

  • Reds' Peyton Burdick: Departs 40-man roster

The Reds designated Burdick for assignment Friday.

Burdick was claimed off waivers by Cincinnati on April 24 but was never called up to the big-league roster. He slashed .180/.279/.327 across 172 plate appearances with Triple-A Louisville and will likely remain in the Reds' organization if he clears waivers. Austin Wynns will take Burdick's spot on the 40-man roster.

  • Reds' Austin Wynns: Rejoining Cincinnati

The reds selected Wynns' contract from Triple-A Louisville on Friday.

The 33-year-old will rejoin the Reds with starting catcher Tyler Stephenson being placed on the Paternity List. Wynns is slashing .250/.309/.410 with 16 RBI so far this season in Louisville.

  • Reds' Tyler Stephenson: Placed on paternity list

Stephenson was placed on the paternity list Friday.

Stephenson was scratched from Thursday's game to be present for the birth of his child and, as expected, was placed on the paternity list Friday. By rule, he can miss up to two additional games.

  • Reds' Noelvi Marte: Three hits, three runs in return

Marte went 3-for-5 with a double, an RBI, three runs and a stolen base Thursday against the Cardinals.

The 22-year-old made his season debut after sitting out the first 80 games of the season due to a PED suspension, and he immediately provided a boost to Cincinnati's lineup. Marte batted just .151 in 12 games during his minor-league rehab assignment, but he didn't show any of that rust in his first game with the Reds. He should operate as the club's primary third baseman the rest of the way after he posted an .822 OPS over 35 games in his first taste of the majors in 2023.

  • Reds' Connor Phillips: Sent to rookie ball

Phillips was assigned to the Arizona Complex League on Tuesday.

Phillips has loud stuff, but his control and command have been major weaknesses throughout his career. He gave up 23 earned runs in 10.1 innings over his three most recent starts for Triple-A Louisville, and the assignment to the complex will presumably allow him to work on some mechanical stuff that's easier to address in a less competitive environment.

  • Reds' Sal Stewart: More time at second base

Stewart is slashing .279/.381/.451 with eight home runs and a 15.5 percent strikeout rate in 66 games for High-A Dayton.

The 20-year-old infielder has played more games at second base (31) than at third base (26) this season, which is notable as he had primarily played third base in prior years. Stewart may still fit best at third base, but Cam Collier isn't capable of moving around the infield, so he has seen the bulk of the work at the hot corner for the Dragons. Stewart has always displayed an impressive command of the strike zone, and he is predictably starting to get to more of his above-average raw power in games. His .172 ISO is a career-best mark, and he is slugging .477 with six home runs over his last 30 games. A promotion to Double-A Chattanooga should be coming soon.

  • Reds' Elly De La Cruz: Triples, swipes bag in win

De La Cruz went 3-for-5 with an RBI triple, a run scored and a stolen base in Thursday's win over St. Louis.

The star shortstop kicked things off for Cincinnati with an RBI triple in the first inning to score Jonathan India. De la Cruz would then add another two singles in the contest, giving him his fifth three-hit performance this month and third in his last six games. Over that latter stretch he's batting .464 (13-for-28) with two homers, four RBI and seven runs scored. He also swiped his league-leading 38th bag Thursday after failing to record a steal over his previous eight games.

  • Reds' Spencer Steer: Stays hot in win

Steer went 2-for-5 with a double, a two-run homer and two runs scored in Thursday's win over the Cardinals.

Steer hit a leadoff double in the third inning before coming around to score Cincinnati's third run of the contest, adding a two-run shot off Miles Mikolas in the following frame. The 26-year-old has recorded multiple hits in three of his last four games, tallying six RBI over that stretch. Steer's batting .286 in June with four homers, 16 RBI and 11 runs scored.

  • Reds' Andrew Abbott: Season-high six walks in win

Abbott (7-6) picked up the win over the Cardinals on Thursday, allowing two runs on two hits and six walks over five innings while striking out two.

The only runs charged to Abbott on the night came on a two-run homer from Nolan Arenado in the bottom of the third, as the lefty managed to pitch his way out of trouble the rest of the time despite issuing a season-high six free passes. Abbott has now won four of his last five starts, though he finishes the month of June with 15 walks, compared to just six in May. On the positive side, he's also gone at least five innings in 11 consecutive starts and hasn't given up more than three runs in five straight.

  • Reds' Tyler Stephenson: Scratched from Thursday's lineup

Stephenson (personal) was scratched from Thursday's lineup against the Cardinals, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports.

Stephenson was scratched moments before first pitch to be present for the birth of his child. He'll likely be placed on the paternity list and will miss between one and three additional games. Luke Maile took over behind the dish.

  • Reds' Jake Fraley: Undergoes MRI on calf

Fraley underwent an MRI on his right calf Thursday, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports.

It's not clear what the result of the exam revealed or if they're in yet, but Fraley will miss a second straight start Thursday after being a late scratch from Wednesday's lineup. Santiago Espinal is getting the call at designated hitter for Cincinnati.

  • Reds' Jeimer Candelario: Remaining out Thursday

Candelario (hamstring) isn't in the Reds' lineup for Thursday's game against the Cardinals.

Manager David Bell said Wednesday that Candelario has been dealing with hamstring tendinitis for the past week, and while the team still doesn't plan on placing the 30-year-old on the injured list, the injury will cause him to miss a second consecutive game. Spencer Steer will get the nod at first base as a result, allowing Nick Martini to start in left field and bat fifth.

  • Reds' Emilio Pagan: Moved to 60-day IL

The Reds transferred Pagan (lat) to the 60-day injured list Thursday.

Pagan landed on the injured list June 9 due to a strained right lat, and his move to the 60-day IL will ensure that he remains sidelined until at least early August. His 40-man roster spot will be given to Noelvi Marte, who was reinstated from his 80-game suspension Thursday.
