• Padres' Randy Vasquez: Gets green light to start Friday

  Vasquez (forearm) has been cleared to make his next start Friday versus the Diamondbacks in San Diego, Kevin Acee of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports. In his most recent start in Friday's 9-2 win over the Mets, Vasquez took a no-decision after he was lifted after 59 pitches and four innings when he was struck in the right forearm by a comebacker. Follow-up X-rays cleared Vasquez of any structural damage to his forearm, and he's been cleared to make his next start after he played catch Sunday without incident. Since returning from Triple-A El Paso on June 1 and rejoining the big-league rotation, Vasquez has gone 2-1 with a 4.20 ERA, 1.60 WHIP and 19:9 K:BB in 30 innings spanning six starts.

A 98-mph line drive off the bat of Ceddanne Rafaela struck Vasquez's arm in the fifth inning, forcing him to leave the game after four-plus innings of one-run ball. The 25-year-old said after the game that he's dealing with a bit of swelling, but he seemed optimistic about his chances to make his next start.

Vasquez took a 98 mph line drive off his forearm during the fifth inning of Friday's contest, and he was taken out of the game after conferring with a trainer. He'll be sent for imaging, and the Padres should have an update on the severity of his injury in the near future. • Padres' Randy Vasquez: Shuts out Brewers over five frames

  Vasquez (2-4) earned the win over the Brewers on Saturday, allowing five hits and three walks over five shutout innings while striking out three. Vasquez struggled with his command early on, issuing walks to three of the first six batters he faced. However, the right-hander would not walk another batter from that point on as he held the Brewers' lineup scoreless over five frames. It was a nice bounceback effort for Vasquez after he surrendered a season-high six runs in his last start. He's now gone at least six innings in five of his last six outings. On the downside, he also issued a season-high three walks in the contest and has walked multiple batters in three consecutive starts.

  Vasquez (1-4) took the loss after he gave up six runs in 4.1 innings Monday against the Phillies. He allowed 12 hits, walked two and struck out two. Vasquez was knocked around by the Phillies on Monday, and the 12 hits he allowed were a career high for the righty. Home runs by Kyle Schwarber and Alec Bohm accounted for most of the damage, but Vasquez was working around baserunners all evening. The 25-year-old has now given up at least three runs in seven of his nine starts this season and has a 5.70 ERA, 1.69 WHIP and 28:9 K:BB across 42.2 innings.

  Vasquez allowed three runs on six hits and struck out three without walking a batter over 6.2 innings in a no-decision versus the Diamondbacks on Thursday. Vasquez struggled early, allowing all three runs over the first two innings. Two of the runs came on solo shots by Eugenio Suarez and Gabriel Moreno in the second. This was Vasquez's second quality start of the campaign, but he's been sub-mediocre with a 5.40 ERA, 1.47 WHIP and 21:5 K:BB over 33.1 innings across his seven starts so far. Joe Musgrove (elbow) is likely to be sidelined at least into July, which opens an opportunity for Vasquez or Adam Mazur to claim a spot in the rotation for a longer run. Vasquez should get at least one more chance to audition versus the Athletics at home next week, and his stay in the majors could be longer if Yu Darvish (groin) isn't able to return when first eligible June 14.

  Vasquez (1-3) earned the win Saturday over the Royals, allowing three runs on four hits and a walk over five innings. He struck out five. After allowing a two-run homer to Vinnie Pasquantino in the first inning, Vasquez ultimately settled in and held the Royals to one run over his final four frames to earn the win. It's the first win in six starts for Vasquez this season, as he was recalled for a spot start after Joe Musgrove (elbow) was scratched. Overall, the 25-year-old Vasquez sports a 5.74 ERA with a 1.61 WHIP and 18:5 K:BB across 26.2 innings with the Padres this year. He could be in for an extended stay in the rotation due to Musgrove joining Yu Darvish (groin) on the IL. Vasquez would currently line up for a home matchup with the Diamondbacks next week.

Vasquez gave up four of those runs in the fourth inning and was ultimately relieved by Adrian Morejon. Aside from his start versus the Cubs last Tuesday, Vasquez has posted mostly mediocre outings at the major-league level this year. He's at a 6.32 ERA, 1.79 WHIP and 11:4 K:BB through 15.2 innings across four starts. If Joe Musgrove (elbow) returns from the injured list when first eligible Friday, Vasquez could lose his place on the 26-man roster.

The 25-year-old got another start with Yu Darvish (neck) on the injured list, though Vasquez didn't fare well in the Colorado altitude. The Padres staked him to an early 4-1 lead, but the right-hander allowed the Rockies to pull even in the third and was lifted after retiring only two batters in the frame. Vasquez was much better in his first start of the campaign against the Blue Jays on April 20, and Coors Field has a history of demolishing pitcher stat lines, so the right-hander may still get another turn in the rotation if Darvish isn't ready to return when first eligible.

Wednesday's start was a step in the wrong direction, as the right hander served up five extra-base hits, including a trio of homers. One thing going for Vasquez is that he had moderate success with the Yankees in his first taste of major-league action last year.
