  • Red Sox's Rob Refsnyder: Back as DH for Sunday

Refsnyder (knee) is serving as the designated hitter and batting second in Sunday's series finale against the Reds.

Right knee soreness kept Refsnyder out of the starting lineup for each of the last three games. He did hit an RBI single in the top of the eighth inning of Saturday's 4-3 win over Cincinnati after pinch hitting for Wilyer Abreu, and Refsnyder stayed in right field for the last two frames. For the month of June, Refsnyder is slashing .308/.383/.385 with four RBI over 52 at-bats.

  • Red Sox's Rob Refsnyder: Battling knee soreness

Red Sox manager Alex Cora said Friday that Refsnyder is dealing with right knee soreness, Christopher Smith of MassLive.com reports.

Cora doesn't think the injury is serious, but Refsnyder hasn't been in the Red Sox lineup for two consecutive games, though it's unclear if that's due to entirely to the injury. With Wilyer Abreu (ankle) expected to rejoin the active roster Saturday and Masataka Yoshida healthy, Refsnyder's run of consistent playing time was set to come to an end anyway. Once he moves past the knee issue, Refsnyder is likely to see most of his starts against left-handed pitching.

  • Red Sox's Rob Refsnyder: Heading to bench Wednesday

Refsnyder is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Blue Jays, Mac Cerullo of the Boston Herald reports.

Refsnyder had started in each of the Red Sox's last four games and in 12 of the team's last 14 games overall, but he'll hit the bench Wednesday as Boston rolls out an outfield of Jarren Duran, Romy Gonzalez and Tyler O'Neill from left to right. With Masataka Yoshida healthy again and serving as Boston's primary designated hitter against right-handed pitching and with Wilyer Abreu (ankle) nearing a return from the injured list, Refsnyder looks like he'll soon be headed for a short-side platoon role.

  • Red Sox's Rob Refsnyder: Getting eighth straight start

Refsnyder will start in right field and bat second in Wednesday's game against the Phillies.

Refsnyder will pick up his eighth consecutive start Wednesday, but his run of regular playing time could come to an abrupt end in the coming days. In addition to bringing back Masataka Yoshida from the 10-day injured list Tuesday, the Red Sox returned another key regular to the lineup in Tyler O'Neill (knee), who will serve as Boston's designated hitter Wednesday following a three-game absence. Assuming O'Neill is cleared to play the corner outfield in the near future, Refsnyder could soon be relegated to a short-side platoon role. Wilyer Abreu (ankle) is also close to a return from the 10-day IL to further muddle Refsnyder's path to seeing steady at-bats versus right-handed pitching.
