Smith is waiting on a second opinion before anything is decided, but it appears the writing is on the wall. It's a blow to the Mets and also poor timing for Smith, who is set to become a free agent this offseason. Given that it would be his second Tommy John surgery, Smith could be sidelined until 2026.
Baez was promoted from Single-A St. Lucie to High-A Brooklyn on Monday.
The 19-year-old infielder hit .262 with 10 home runs, eight steals and a 16.2 percent strikeout rate in 64 games at Single-A. Despite the stolen bases on his ledger, Baez has a thick 5-foot-10 frame and is a below-average runner. He figures to end up at third base long term, where his impressive raw power will be his calling card.
Taylor went 1-for-3 with a three-run home run, an additional run and a walk against the Yankees on Wednesday in a 12-2 victory.
Taylor's biggest contribution was a three-run blast in the sixth inning that essentially put the game on ice, giving the Mets a 10-2 lead. It was the outfielder's first homer since April 24 -- a span of 42 games and 94 at-bats. Taylor has made two straight starts in right field with Starling Marte (knee) on the injured list, so he may have a chance to turn around what has so far been a quiet first season as a Met.

Alvarez touched up Yankees starter Luis Gil for a two-run homer in the third inning and added a run-scoring double in the fifth. Houser picked up a save in the Mets' 12-2 win over the Yankees on Wednesday, allowing two hits and one walk while striking out three batters over three scoreless innings.
Houser entered with the Mets holding an eight-run lead and cruised the remainder of the way to notch the first save of his career. The right-hander threw 44 pitches in the outing, and he's tossed at least two frames in all but one of his eight appearances since returning to the bullpen May 26. Houser has thrived since making that transition, allowing just three earned runs across 20.2 innings.

The 27-year-old was claimed off waivers from the Tigers in late May and will now receive his first look in the majors for the Mets.
