Tuesday's pitchers' duel featured two candidates in the American League Rookie of the Year race in Messick and Payton Tolle. Messick got the better of Tolle, with the former allowing only one run on an RBI groundout in the second inning. Messick was in line for his 13th win of the season before the Red Sox tied things up at 2-2 in the eighth on a solo homer by Mickey Gasper. Messick is currently slated to make one final start in the regular season this weekend against the Royals, though the 25-year-old southpaw may not pitch depending on the Guardians' playoff situation. If Tuesday's outing at Fenway Park was Messick's last of the regular season, he'll finish with a 12-9 record across 31 starts with a 2.55 ERA, 1.04 WHIP and 191:48 K:BB over 183.1 innings.

The southpaw fired 62 of 86 pitches for strikes in an impressive outing that helped Cleveland claim first place in the AL Central for the first time since July 4. Messick (10-8) earned the win over the Angels on Monday, allowing one run on three hits and one walk while striking out four batters over six innings.
Messick was perfect for three innings, but the Angels got to him for a run on three singles in the fourth. Those ended up being the only hits the left-hander allowed, and he faced the minimum the rest of the way. Messick didn't have his swing-and-miss stuff working -- the four punchouts were his fewest since he notched just one strikeout against Miami on July 10 -- but he nonetheless recorded his second straight quality start and his 11th overall this season. He's been one of the AL's most effective starters in 2026 with a 2.50 ERA, 1.01 WHIP and 156:41 K:BB over 155 innings spanning 26 starts.
Messick (9-8) took the loss against the Giants on Wednesday, allowing one run on six hits and no walks with 10 strikeouts over 6.2 innings.
