Player Outlook
The definition of a spare piece for Baltimore, Joseph Ortiz was shipped to Milwaukee along with DL Hall in exchange for Corbin Burnes in a contract year. The righty-hitting Ortiz is a plus defender who can play all over the infield, but he didn't project to provide enough offensive impact to play ahead of players like Jackson Holliday or Gunnar Henderson long term. Ortiz is a capable offensive player - he slashed .321/.378/.507 with nine home runs, 11 steals and a 17.7 percent strikeout rate in 88 games at Triple-A, good for a 121 wRC+. However, his .373 BABIP and the fact he turns 26 in July make that Triple-A production less impressive. Ortiz is a candidate to hit 10 homers and steal 10 bases without hurting your batting average, but he could hit at the bottom of the lineup against righties. He enters the season only eligible at second base, but Ortiz should play pretty regularly at third base early this season and he could be the shortstop of the future if Willy Adames leaves next offseason in free agency or gets traded during the season.

Ortiz (neck) will start at third base and bat leadoff Saturday against the Cubs. • Brewers' Joey Ortiz: Managing neck issue

Brewers manager Pat Murphy said Ortiz was removed from Wednesday's win over the Rangers due to a neck injury, Todd Rosiak of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. The injury apparently surfaced during last week's series against the Angels, and it prompted his removal from Wednesday's contest in the sixth inning after going 0-for-2. Ortiz's ability to play through the issue indicates it isn't a serious concern, so he could be back in action Friday versus the Cubs following Thursday's team off day.

  • Brewers' Joey Ortiz: Leaves with apparent injury

Ortiz was removed from Wednesday's game versus the Rangers in the bottom of the sixth inning with an apparent injury, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports. He went hitless in two at-bats before leaving the game. Ortiz ran into the tarp while chasing after a pop-up in the top of the sixth, and though he initially stayed in the game, he was lifted in favor of a pinch hitter in the bottom of the frame. It's not clear yet what injury Ortiz might be dealing with, but the Brewers should offer more clarity soon.

He continues to crush right-handed pitching this season, slashing .327/.424/.618 in that split with three home runs, eight runs scored and 10 RBI in 66 plate appearances. The 25-year-old will continue to jockey with Oliver Dunn for playing time at the hot corner, but Ortiz's recent hot streak could give him the upper hand.

  • Brewers' Joey Ortiz: Heading back to bench Wednesday

Ortiz is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Royals. After sitting in four straight games to close out this past weekend, Ortiz picked up starts at second base and third base in the Brewers' first two contests in Kansas City, going 1-for-5 with a solo home run and a walk between those games. The 25-year-old still looks to be the Brewers' preferred option at the hot corner, though he'll give way to Oliver Dunn on Wednesday.

  • Brewers' Joey Ortiz: Sits in fourth straight

Ortiz is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Cubs. Ortiz finds himself on the bench for the fourth game in a row, a surprising development considering that he's maintaining an excellent .388 on-base percentage and .827 OPS through 80 plate appearances on the season. According to Curt Hogg of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Ortiz's benching isn't disciplinary in nature or due to any dissatisfaction of his performance. Instead, manager Pat Murphy expressed a desire to take a longer look at rookie Oliver Dunn, who hadn't gotten to play much over the past few weeks once Ortiz emerged as the superior option at third base. Dunn will start his fourth straight game Sunday, and Murphy said the Brewers are using the run of extended action to evaluate whether it's worthwhile to keep Dunn in a utility role with the big club or to have him play more frequently in the minors.
