After spending two days away from the team to spend time with his family, Freeman will return to the Dodgers for the start of their three-game set in San Francisco. Ryan Ward was optioned to Triple-A Oklahoma City in a corresponding move.
Ward started at first base and went 2-for-5 with an RBI in Sunday's loss to the Rockies.
Ward made his big-league debut and produced early, notching his first MLB hit and RBI with a fourth-inning single. The reigning Pacific Coast League MVP was off to a monster start at Triple-A Oklahoma City, posting a 1.020 OPS through 18 games, which prompted his promotion following Freddie Freeman's move to the paternity list. Earning regular opportunities with the Dodgers will be difficult, though Ward has more than proven himself against Triple-A pitching and turned in an encouraging MLB debut.

The Dodgers added Ward to the 40-man roster over the winter after he slashed .292/.382/.558 with 36 home runs and 16 stolen bases in 143 games at Oklahoma City last season on his way to claiming Pacific Coast League MVP honors. He's gotten off to another strong start with the Triple-A club in 2026 (1.020 OPS, three steals in 18 games) and could end up serving as the Dodgers' main option at first base while Freeman is away from the team for the next 1-to-3 days.

Freeman has played in all 20 of Los Angeles' games this season but will now step away from the team for a few days to be with his growing family. The veteran first baseman should rejoin the club during the upcoming three-game series in San Francisco this week. Ryan Ward was called up Sunday to round out the Dodgers' 26-man roster.
The Dodgers are expected to recall Ward from Triple-A Oklahoma City on Saturday, Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic reports.
Ward first reached the Triple-A level in 2023 and has seen his OPS increase in every season he's been at Oklahoma City. After beginning the 2026 campaign by slashing .324/.432/.588 through 81 plate appearances, the 28-year-old will finally get the call to join the big-league roster for the first time. He's spent most of his time in the outfield throughout his professional career but has primarily played at first base this season. It's unlikely he sees regular playing time with the Dodgers, but he could make an occasional start if Freddie Freeman, Teoscar Hernandez or Kyle Tucker need a day off.
