Tuesday marks the first time Nelson has faced hitters since he landed on the injured list back in June with a strained right elbow. He threw 21 pitches during his first live session but is expected to be brought back as a reliever, so he won't need to spend time building up his workload. The 28-year-old righty said he is hopeful to begin pitching in rehab games soon, though the Diamondbacks haven't indicated when he might begin a minor-league assignment.

Nelson began his bullpen progression Friday. If the right-hander comes out of Friday's session without issue, he'll throw another one Tuesday. The Diamondbacks are leaning toward bringing Nelson back as a reliever, which will require a shorter ramp-up, as injured starters Corbin Burnes (elbow) and Zac Gallen (elbow) are ahead of him.

Nelson has been on the injured list since June 19 after suffering a flexor strain and UCL sprain in his right elbow. The team reported in mid-July that the right-hander was closing in on a throwing program, and this latest update indicates that he's continuing to progress. A timetable for Nelson's return is still up in the air and will depend on how his elbow feels upon returning to the bump.

Arizona manager Torey Lovullo said that Nelson (elbow) will begin a throwing program Saturday or Sunday, Alex D'Agostino of SI.com reports.
Lovullo said Saturday that Nelson has shown considerable improvement since landing on the injured list June 19 due to a strained right elbow. The skipper still believes that the right-hander will be able to pitch again for the big club this season, though it's unclear whether Nelson will return from the IL as a starter or reliever. A better idea of his return timeline and expected role should emerge as he clears hurdles in his throwing program.
The Diamondbacks transferred Nelson (elbow) to the 60-day injured list Thursday.
Nelson landed on the injured list last Friday due to a flexor strain in his right elbow, and his move to the 60-day IL will ensure that he remains out until at least mid-August. The move also creates space on the 40-man roster for Max Kepler, who returned from his 80-game suspension Thursday.

John Gambadoro of Arizona Sports 98.7 FM says it's a partially torn flexor tendon for Nelson, who held the Angels to two runs over seven innings in his last start Monday. There's been no timetable provided by the Diamondbacks yet, but the nature of the injury points to the likelihood of a lengthy absence for Nelson. Brandon Pfaadt is a candidate to replace Nelson in the Arizona rotation.

Nelson (3-5) tossed seven innings against the Angels on Monday, allowing two runs on nine hits and no walks while striking out five batters to earn the win.
Nelson yielded seven runs over four innings against Miami in his previous start, but he bounced back nicely Monday. The right-hander started a bit shakily by giving up a run on two hits in the first frame, but the Angels crossed the plate only once more over the remainder of Nelson's time in the game. While Nelson registered a modest five punchouts, that was his highest mark since he struck out eight Rangers six starts ago. Nelson has a mediocre 4.97 ERA on the campaign and has experienced several blowups, but he also has six quality starts over his past eight outings, so he's still been useful in the right matchups.
Nelson (2-5) picked up the loss Wednesday, allowing seven runs on eight hits and one walk over four innings during the 8-0 loss against the Marlins. He struck out two.
Nelson was shelled as he delivered his shortest start since he gave up eight runs in one-third of an inning April 19 versus Toronto. The right-hander was hurt by home runs in the fourth inning by Owen Caissie and Kyle Stowers, as he's already served up 17 long balls this season. After quality starts in five of his previous six games, Nelson struggled with control Wednesday, hitting two batters and throwing strikes on only 53 of his 82 pitches. The 28-year-old is slated to start at home against the Angels next week.

The right-hander began his outing with four hitless innings before Kyle Tucker singled off him to begin the fifth. He threw 94 pitches (62 strikes) while recording his fifth quality start in his past six appearances. He's had a couple blowups this season, but since the beginning of May, Nelson has pitched to a solid 2.89 ERA and 0.99 WHIP over 46.2 frames spanning seven starts.
Nelson (2-4) allowed five runs (four earned) on seven hits and a hit batsman while striking out three and walking none over 5.1 innings, taking the loss versus the Mariners on Saturday.
Nelson served up a pair of solo shots in both the second and third innings, and that was too much for the Diamondbacks to come back from. This is the fifth time he's allowed multiple homers in a start this season. He had strung together four straight quality starts before Saturday's poor outing. Nelson is now at a 4.82 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 52:19 K:BB through 65.1 innings over 12 starts this season. He is tentatively lined up for a tough home start versus the Dodgers in his next outing.
