Tigers' Tarik Skubal: Fans dozen Royals in seventh win

Skubal (7-5) picked up the win Friday, allowing one run on four hits and two walks over 7.1 innings in a 2-1 victory over the Royals. He struck out 12.
The dozen strikeouts were a season high for the two-time reigning AL Cy Young Award winner, and Skubal's changeup was particularly vicious, generating 10 whiffs on 14 swings as he put together his eighth quality start of the year. The trade rumors swirling about Skubal haven't been a distraction for him, and over four outings in July he's delivered a 1.48 ERA, 0.95 WHIP and 35:5 K:BB over 24.1 innings. He lines up to make what could be his final start as a Tiger at home next week against the Orioles.

Skubal (6-5) earned the win over the Angels on Saturday, allowing five hits and issuing no walks while striking out nine batters over seven scoreless innings.
Detroit put up four runs in the first inning, which were more than enough for the veteran southpaw. Skubal held the Angels without an extra-base hit and racked up 19 whiffs en route to nine punchouts -- an amount he has posted exactly in four of his past five outings. Skubal also notched his first scoreless start since his very first appearance of the campaign (March 26 versus San Diego). There has been plenty of trade chatter including Skubal's name, but there's no guarantee that the Tigers will move him, especially since they've won eight of their past 10 contests to pull within 5.5 games of the White Sox and Guardians in a tight AL Central.
Skubal (5-5) took the loss Sunday against the Phillies, allowing two runs on four hits and a walk over five innings. He struck out five.
While Skubal has now given up two runs or fewer in each of his last three outings, he was stuck with the loss Sunday, as the Tigers' offense couldn't muster anything against Zack Wheeler in an eventual 5-0 defeat. Skubal will head into the All-Star break with a 3.09 ERA, 0.95 WHIP and 89:11 K:BB across 13 starts (75.2 innings).
