The All-Star right-hander has stumbled lately, coughing up 12 runs over his past two appearances and watching his season ERA jump from 2.85 following his July 11 start versus the Angels to 3.52 after Wednesday's outing. Ryan, who also sports a 1.11 WHIP and 135:25 K:BB across 120.1 innings, will be aiming to right the ship in a rematch with Kansas City next week if he stays put with the Twins past Monday's trade deadline.

It wasn't the outing Ryan was hoping for coming out of the All-Star break. Six of the 10 hits he allowed went yard, setting both a career and franchise high, and he also set career highs in hits and runs allowed. Ryan's poor performance Monday rose his ERA from 2.85 to 3.38, and he'll look to bounce back this weekend at home against the Athletics.

In Ryan's stead, Minnesota will turn to Kendry Rojas to serve as their opening pitcher Tuesday in what will likely be a bullpen game. The Twins haven't provided word on the severity of Ryan's illness, so it's unclear if he'll be available to pitch in their series later in the week against Colorado or if he'll have his turn in the rotation skipped entirely. The 30-year-old righty has gotten off to a strong start to the 2026 campaign, posting a 5-3 record, 2.99 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and 99:18 K:BB across 87.1 innings.
Ryan (5-3) earned the win Thursday over the Rangers, allowing three hits and two walks over five scoreless innings. He struck out seven.
While it was another excellent outing overall from Ryan, he failed to make it through six innings for the first time in his last eight starts since he needed 97 pitches to make it through five frames Thursday. Overall, Ryan's ERA is down to 2.99 this season with a 1.00 WHIP and 99:18 K:BB across 16 starts (87.1 innings). He's currently lined up to face the Dodgers at home in his next outing.
Ryan wasn't involved in the decision Friday against the Cardinals. He allowed three runs on six hits across six innings while striking out eight.
Ryan has six quality starts over his last seven appearances, and the star hurler continues to be a consistent, dependable presence on the mound for the Twins every time he takes the ball. Ryan, who has at least eight strikeouts in four of his last five appearances as well, owns a 2.66 ERA, 0.95 WHIP and 10.8 K/9 across 44 innings and eight starts since the beginning of May. He's slated to make his next start on the road against the Rangers.
