There might not have been a prospect to improve their standing more than Luis Matos did last season. He was awful and often injured in the low minors in 2022, but the young outfielder earned a promotion to the big leagues in mid-June after getting off to a blistering .350/.415/.561 start between Double-A Richmond and Triple-A Sacramento. Matos wasn't ever able to get going with the Giants, eventually leading to a couple stints back in the minors during the second half. The struggles weren't surprising given that he was just 21 and had very little upper-minors experience before getting called up. Matos' elite contact rates from the minors (12.2 percent strikeout rate) did carry over to the majors (13 percent) and the hope is that some over-the-fence power will come along as he matures. Ultimately, though, there are still a wide range of outcomes here.

Matos has been back on the Giants' roster for a week, going 8-for-20 (.400) with two homers and three RBI in that span. He started hot after a call-up in mid-May as well before tailing off at the end of the month, so it'll be important to see him sustain his good hitting. Through 110 plate appearances, the outfielder is slashing .257/.282/.400 with four homers, 23 RBI, 11 runs scored and no stolen bases.

Matos jumped on a hanging knuckle-curve from Drew Smyly in the fifth and sent it into the stands in left-center field for his third home run of the campaign and first since May 18 against Colorado. It marked the outfielder's second consecutive two-hit performance and first RBI this month. He's also hit safely in three straight contests and is now batting .320 (8-for-25) in June.

If this were a true meritocracy, Matos, who is slashing .256/.326/.615 with three home runs, one steal and an 11.6 percent strikeout rate in 43 plate appearances this spring, would likely make the team as a starter over one of Michael Conforto or Mike Yastrzemski. However, Conforto is due $18 million this year and Yastrzemski is earning $7.9 million this year via arbitration. The Giants could keep Matos on the roster in a part-time role, but Austin Slater is already ticketed for fourth outfielder duty and Tyler Fitzgerald is expected to get the final bench spot due to his defensive versatility. If an outfield spot opens up due to an injury or poor performance early in the season, Matos would be the obvious candidate to get the call.
