Player Outlook
There might not have been a prospect to improve their standing more than Luis Matos did last season. He was awful and often injured in the low minors in 2022, but the young outfielder earned a promotion to the big leagues in mid-June after getting off to a blistering .350/.415/.561 start between Double-A Richmond and Triple-A Sacramento. Matos wasn't ever able to get going with the Giants, eventually leading to a couple stints back in the minors during the second half. The struggles weren't surprising given that he was just 21 and had very little upper-minors experience before getting called up. Matos' elite contact rates from the minors (12.2 percent strikeout rate) did carry over to the majors (13 percent) and the hope is that some over-the-fence power will come along as he matures. Ultimately, though, there are still a wide range of outcomes here.

  • Giants' Luis Matos: Lifts fourth homer

Matos went 1-for-3 with a solo home run and a walk in Friday's 5-3 win over the Dodgers. Matos has been back on the Giants' roster for a week, going 8-for-20 (.400) with two homers and three RBI in that span. He started hot after a call-up in mid-May as well before tailing off at the end of the month, so it'll be important to see him sustain his good hitting. Through 110 plate appearances, the outfielder is slashing .257/.282/.400 with four homers, 23 RBI, 11 runs scored and no stolen bases.

  • Giants' Luis Matos: Getting regular playing time

Matos will start in right field and bat sixth Thursday against the Cubs, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. Matos is being included in the lineup for the fifth time in six games, and he looks like he'll hang on to a regular role in the corner outfield while Mike Yastrzemski (oblique) is on the injured list. Since getting called up from Triple-A Sacramento last weekend, Matos has gone 6-for-14 with a solo home run.

  • Giants' Luis Matos: Smacks third homer

Matos went 2-for-3 with a solo home run in Wednesday's victory over the Cubs. Matos jumped on a hanging knuckle-curve from Drew Smyly in the fifth and sent it into the stands in left-center field for his third home run of the campaign and first since May 18 against Colorado. It marked the outfielder's second consecutive two-hit performance and first RBI this month. He's also hit safely in three straight contests and is now batting .320 (8-for-25) in June.

  • Giants' Luis Matos: Summoned from Sacramento

The Giants recalled Matos from Triple-A Sacramento on Saturday, Shayna Rubin of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. With Mike Yastrzemski (oblique) landing on the injured list in a corresponding move, Matos will return to San Francisco and could serve as Yastrzemski's main replacement in the starting outfield. The 22-year-old has slashed just .224/.247/.329 with 20 RBI across 89 plate appearances during his time in the big leagues this season.

  • Giants' Luis Matos: Five RBI in win

Matos went 3-for-5 with two doubles and five RBI in Friday's 10-5 win over the Rockies. Matos enjoyed one of the best games of his career, driving in at least one run with each of his hits. He added an RBI on a groundout in the seventh inning as well. The 22-year-old is hitting .333 (7-for-21) with 11 RBI and three extra-base hits over his first six contests this season. With Jung Hoo Lee (shoulder) out for the year, Matos has a golden opportunity to claim a full-time major-league job if he can keep hitting well.

  • Giants' Luis Matos: Lifts three-run homer

Matos went 1-for-4 with a three-run home run in Monday's 6-4 extra-inning loss to the Dodgers. Matos did his damage early, taking Yoshinobu Yamamoto deep in the second inning. The homer was Matos' first hit over three games this season, and he's added four RBI and two runs scored. The outfielder was slashing a paltry .218/.309/.355 over 31 contests with Triple-A Sacramento prior to his call-up, but he'll have a chance to show what he can do in the majors while filling in for Jung Hoo Lee (shoulder) in center field.

  • Giants' Luis Matos: Moves up from Triple-A

The Giants recalled Matos from Triple-A Sacramento on Sunday. Matos will join the Giants and provide outfield depth after Michael Conforto (hamstring) was placed on the 10-day injured list in a corresponding move. At the Triple-A level this season, Matos has slashed .221/.312/.361 with three home runs and 17 RBI over 141 plate appearances.

  • Giants' Luis Matos: Could replace Conforto on roster

Matos was pulled from a game at Triple-A Sacramento on Saturday in case he's needed to replace Michael Conforto (hamstring) on the Giants' roster, John Shea of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. Conforto is dealing with a right hamstring strain and is set to undergo an MRI on Sunday to determine the extent of the injury. Matos has spent virtually the entire season with Sacramento and has struggled, having come into play Saturday slashing .221/.312/.361 with three home runs and three steals. He and Heliot Ramos could be the top options in left field for San Francisco if Conforto misses time.

  • Giants' Luis Matos: Recalled from Triple-A

The Giants recalled Matos from Triple-A Sacramento on Friday, Maria I. Guardado of MLB.com reports. With Mike Yastrzemski away on paternity leave, Matos will come up from the minors to fill the void in San Francisco's outfield. The 22-year-old slashed .250/.319/.342 across 253 plate appearances in the majors last season, and he will likely grab a spot on the bench until Yastrzemski returns.

  • Giants' Luis Matos: Sent to Triple-A

The Giants optioned Matos to Triple-A Sacramento on Thursday, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. For much of spring training, Matos looked to be in good position to win an Opening Day roster spot while Austin Slater (elbow) missed time, but Slater was cleared to make a start in the outfield earlier this week at the tail end of the Giants' exhibition schedule and ended up avoiding a stint on the injured list. As a result, Matos found himself as the odd man out for a roster berth and will now head to Sacramento, where he should play on an everyday basis.

  • Giants' Luis Matos: Unlikely to make roster

Matos is unlikely to make the Opening Day roster, Shayna Rubin of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. If this were a true meritocracy, Matos, who is slashing .256/.326/.615 with three home runs, one steal and an 11.6 percent strikeout rate in 43 plate appearances this spring, would likely make the team as a starter over one of Michael Conforto or Mike Yastrzemski. However, Conforto is due $18 million this year and Yastrzemski is earning $7.9 million this year via arbitration. The Giants could keep Matos on the roster in a part-time role, but Austin Slater is already ticketed for fourth outfielder duty and Tyler Fitzgerald is expected to get the final bench spot due to his defensive versatility. If an outfield spot opens up due to an injury or poor performance early in the season, Matos would be the obvious candidate to get the call.

  • Giants' Luis Matos: Could see time in center

Matos may see time in center field until Austin Slater (elbow) is ready to play, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. Previous projections had Matos as the everyday left fielder, but the addition of Jorge Soler at designated hitter will have a ripple effect with Michael Conforto needing an outfield spot on at least a platoon basis. Jung Hoo Lee still figures to get most of the time in center field, and it's possible Matos ends up functioning more like a fourth outfielder unless he wins a starting role out of camp. As long as Matos makes the team, he should be in the lineup regularly versus left-handed pitchers, though it's unclear how much manager Bob Melvin will rely on platoons to balance playing time in a deep outfield.

  • Giants' Luis Matos: Hits bench Thursday

Matos isn't in the Giants' lineup Thursday against the Dodgers, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. Matos is just 1-for-11 across hist last four games, so the Giants will give him a day off Thursday to regroup. The newly-promoted Tyler Fitzgerald will make his major-league debut in center field and bat ninth while Matos rests.

  • Giants' Luis Matos: Not starting Tuesday

Matos isn't in the Giants' lineup Tuesday against Arizona, Maria I. Guardado of MLB.com reports. Matos is slashing .344/.400/.406 since returning from Triple-A Sacramento on Sept. 6, and he'll take a seat to begin San Francisco's series with the D-backs. Mike Yastrzemski will shift to center field while Matos rests, allowing Mitch Haniger to start in left while batting sixth.

  • Giants' Luis Matos: On bench Sunday

Matos is out of the lineup Sunday versus the Rockies. Matos had started in every game since Sept. 6. That was when he was summoned back to the big leagues, and he has gone 11-for-32 since while registering an .806 OPS.

  • Giants' Luis Matos: Reaches base four times in win

Matos went 3-for-4 with two doubles, a walk and a run scored in Friday's 9-8 win over the Rockies. Matos has a pair of multi-hit efforts since he was recalled from Triple-A Sacramento on Wednesday. If he can keep hitting like that, he'll have no trouble holding down a regular role in center field. The 21-year-old outfielder is batting .266 with two home runs, 11 RBI, 22 runs scored and three stolen bases over 207 plate appearances in the majors this season. Matos has displayed solid plate discipline with a 13.0 percent strikeout rate and a 7.2 percent walk rate, which bodes well for his development down the line.

  • Giants' Luis Matos: Summoned to big leagues

Matos was recalled from Triple-A Sacramento on Wednesday. The Giants elected to keep Wade Meckler around last week when Mike Yastrzemski returned, but they've reversed course this week. Matos should receive fairly regular playing time, whether that comes in center field or in a corner spot with Yastrzemski moving back to center.

  • Giants' Luis Matos: Sent back to minors

Matos was optioned to Triple-A Sacramento on Wednesday, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports. Mike Yastrzemski is back from the injured list and it's Matos -- and not Wade Meckler -- losing his roster spot. The rookie outfielder has slashed .250/.311/.356 in his first 59 big-league contests.

  • Giants' Luis Matos: Garners third straight start

Matos will start in right field and bat ninth in Sunday's game against Atlanta, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports. He'll nab his third consecutive start after going 2-for-5 with a double between the first two contests of the series. With all of Michael Conforto (hamstring), Mike Yastrzemski (hamstring), Mitch Haniger (forearm) and AJ Pollock (oblique) stuck on the injured list, Matos could get a chance to play on a near-everyday basis in the Giants outfield.

  • Giants' Luis Matos: Homers in return to majors

Matos went 2-for-5 with a solo home run in Sunday's win over Atlanta. Matos, who was recalled from Triple-A Sacramento prior to Sunday's contest, opened the scoring in the second inning with a 425-foot blast off of Max Fried. It's Matos' second homer with the Giants this season after hitting 10 in the minors. Overall, the rookie outfielder is slashing .245/.309/.337 with 18 runs scored, 10 RBI and three steals across 180 major-league plate appearances this season.
