Nationals' Trevor Williams: Completes fifth rehab start
Williams (elbow) struck out three and allowed three earned runs on six hits and two walks across 3.1 innings in a rehab start Sunday with High-A Wilmington.
Williams has now made five rehab starts across stops at five different affiliates, compiling a 4.09 ERA, 1.55 WHIP and 13:3 K:BB in 11 innings. The 3.1 innings and 60 pitches Williams handled Sunday marked the highest totals of his rehab assignment, as the Nationals are seemingly having him build up slowly in his return from internal brace surgery. Given the unremarkable results he's submitted thus far during his time in the minors in addition to rehabbing starter Jake Irvin (shoulder) also closing in on a return from the 60-day injured list, Williams may not be in line for a spot in the Washington rotation once he's activated.

Nationals' Trevor Williams: Strikes out five in rehab start
Williams (elbow) struck out five and allowed one unearned run on one hit and one walk across two innings Tuesday in a rehab start in the rookie-level Florida Complex League.
Williams has now made four rehab starts since his 30-day window opened June 28, but he has yet to reach three innings in any of those appearances. Though the veteran right-hander has worked primarily as a starter during his big-league career, the lighter workloads he's handled two and a half weeks into his rehab assignment suggest that the Nationals could be preparing for him to handle a multi-inning role out of the bullpen once he returns from the 60-day injured list. Williams has been on the shelf all season while completing his recovery from internal brace surgery, which he underwent last July.

Nationals' Trevor Williams: Covers 2.2 innings in rehab start
Williams (elbow) struck out two and allowed two hits and no walks over 2.2 scoreless innings Wednesday in a rehab start at Triple-A Rochester.
Through three starts since beginning his rehab assignment June 28, Williams has turned in a 3.18 ERA, 1.24 WHIP and 5:0 K:BB over 5.2 innings across stops with Rochester, Double-A Harrisburg and Single-A Fredericksburg. Williams is building up his innings and pitch counts slowly but surely as he works his way back from last July's internal brace surgery and will likely require at least two or three more appearances in the minors to get fully stretched out. The Nationals don't appear to have a spot available in the rotation for Williams at the moment, though that could change in the aftermath of the Aug. 3 trade deadline.

Nationals' Trevor Williams: Third rehab start coming Wednesday
Williams (elbow) is slated to make his third rehab start Wednesday at Triple-A Rochester, Mark Zuckerman of NatsJournal.com reports.
After recording just two outs and yielding four runs (two earned) in his first rehab appearance June 28 with Single-A Fredericksburg, Williams bounced back nicely in his second minor-league outing Friday with Double-A Harrisburg. In that start, Williams struck out two batters and allowed just one hit and no walks over 2.1 scoreless innings. He'll look to get further stretched out Wednesday and is likely to need at least one more start in the minors following the All-Star break before the Nationals consider bringing him back from the 60-day injured list. The Nationals have gotten respectable results lately from Zack Littell, Miles Mikolas and Andrew Alvarez at the back end of the rotation, so it's unclear if the team will be willing to open up a starting role for Williams once he's ready for activation.

Williams spotted 18 of his 26 pitches for strikes in the rehab start -- his first at any level since undergoing an internal brace procedure last July -- but that was about the only positive takeaway from Sunday's outing. The veteran right-hander will likely need the full 30-day rehab window to build up his pitch count and iron out his command, so he likely won't be in consideration for a spot in the Washington rotation until late July or early August. Before requiring surgery last summer, Williams struggled in 17 starts with Washington, posting a 6.21 ERA, 1.54 WHIP and 65:21 K:BB in 82.2 innings.

Nationals' Trevor Williams: Starts throwing again
The Nationals announced that Williams (elbow) has resumed his throwing progression and made 25 tosses from 60 feet Wednesday, Jessica Camerato of MLB.com reports.
Washington had shut down Williams at the onset of spring training when he experienced soreness in his surgically repaired right elbow, but a follow-up MRI apparently revealed nothing too concerning. After a brief rest period, Williams is now in the process of ramping back up again, but a clearer timeline for his 2026 debut with the Nationals won't come into focus until he resumes facing hitters and embarks on what will likely be a lengthy minor-league rehab assignment. At the very least, Williams will remain shelved for the first two months of the season after Washington placed him on its 60-day injured list Feb. 10.

Williams has been shut down from throwing after experiencing soreness in his surgically repaired elbow and has been sent for an MRI, Mark Zuckerman of NatsJournal.com reports.
The veteran right-hander underwent an internal brace procedure in July rather than full Tommy John surgery, and the Nationals are being cautious with his rehab. "I heard the early read was good," manager Blake Butera said Saturday. "It's more of a 'let's make sure things are good.' Trevor feels like he's ready to roll, but we just wanted to be extra cautious and get the imaging. He's going to be with the doc today, but from what I heard, things are in a good spot." Williams said Wednesday that he expects to undergo an internal brace surgery on his right elbow July 17 and will miss the remainder of the season, Spencer Nusbaum of The Washington Post reports.
Williams' announcement comes after he was placed on the 15-day injured list Friday due to a right elbow sprain before being transferred to the 60-day IL just four days later. The right-hander relayed that he has a partial tear in his UCL, and while Tommy John surgery hasn't been completely ruled out, the belief is that he'll be able to get by with an internal brace procedure, which would shorten his recovery timeline. An internal brace procedure would still entail a rehab period of approximately nine months even in a best-case scenario, so Williams is unlikely to be ready to make his 2026 debut until at least next April or May. The 33-year-old will finish 2025 with a 3-10 record and a 6.21 ERA, 1.54 WHIP and 65:21 K:BB in 82.2 innings across 17 starts.

Nationals' Trevor Williams: Takes ninth loss
Williams (3-9) allowed four runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out three over five-plus innings to take the loss Tuesday versus the Padres.
The Nationals scored the first three runs of the game, but Williams couldn't fend off the Padres' comeback. He allowed two runs in the fourth inning and a game-tying solo shot to Martin Maldonado in the fifth before issuing two walks to begin the sixth. One of those runners came around to score, saddling Williams with his fourth loss in five starts in June, a month in which he has allowed 16 runs (15 earned) over 24.1 innings. That's in line with his 5.65 ERA for the year, which comes with a 1.47 WHIP and 61:20 K:BB through 79.2 innings across 16 starts. The right-hander is tentatively projected for a tough home start versus the Tigers early next week.

Nationals' Trevor Williams: Limits damage against Rockies
Williams didn't factor into the decision Thursday against Colorado, allowing two runs on eight hits and a walk with six strikeouts over 5.1 innings.
Williams allowed his most hits in a start since May 3, but he did an excellent job preventing runs and notched a third consecutive appearance giving up fewer than three earned runs. The 33-year-old hasn't completed six innings in six of his last seven outings, and he has a 5.13 ERA and a 24:6 K:BB in 33.1 innings during that stretch. On the year, Williams has a 5.54 ERA across 74.2 innings. He's tentatively scheduled to face the Padres next time out.
