  • Saints' Alvin Kamara: Out for at least one month with MCL sprain

Kamara (knee) is expected to be out for at least one month after sustaining an MCL sprain during Tuesday's joint practice with the Cowboys, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.

The injury puts Kamara's availability in jeopardy for the Saints' Week 1 game in Detroit on Sept. 13 and may also make him a candidate to open the season on injured reserve, which would keep him out for at least New Orleans' first four contests. The Saints will likely wait and see how Kamara progresses in his recovery over the next few weeks before a clearer target for his return to practice and eventually game action comes into focus. In the event that Kamara is out to begin the season, free-agent pickup Travis Etienne would likely take on a larger share of the rushing and pass-catching volume out of the backfield, while backups such as Devin Neal (hamstring), Kendre Miller (back) or Audric Estime (ankle) could also be sprinkled into the game plan a bit more.

  • Saints' Alvin Kamara: Set to miss multiple weeks

Kamara (knee) avoided a major injury Tuesday but "will be out for a few weeks," Nick Underhill of NewOrleans.Football reports.

A knee injury forced Kamara from Tuesday's practice, and while the veteran running back "didn't tear anything," a multi-week absence would cost him the rest of the preseason at the very least. The Saints are struggling to find healthy bodies for their backfield, with Travis Etienne being the only running back among the top four on the depth chart not carrying an injury tag.

  • Saints' Alvin Kamara: Dealing with knee injury

Kamara was unable to finish Tuesday's joint practice with the Cowboys due to a knee injury, Ross Jackson of WWL Louisiana reports.

The details of Kamara's injury aren't yet known, but there's been no indication he's dealing with a serious issue. The veteran running back finalized a new deal to remain with the Saints last month and is expected to form a backfield tandem with newcomer Travis Etienne this season. At 31 years old, however, it's fair to wonder how much Kamara has left in the tank as a fantasy contributor.

  • Saints' Alvin Kamara: Listed as co-RB1 with Etienne

Kamara and Travis Etienne are listed as co-RB1s on the Saints' first unofficial depth chart of training camp, Mike Triplett of NewOrleans.Football reports.

This comes as a bit of a surprise considering Etienne signed a big money deal (four years, $52 million) to join the Saints in the offseason, while Kamara agreed to a reworked contract (one year, $6 million) in mid-July to remain with the only team he's over known. However, Kamara has been taking on more of the passing-down reps during camp, with Etienne handling early downs, and how the running backs are listed on the depth chart suggests both will have regular roles in the offense. That said, the initial depth chart might simply be a sign of respect for a franchise icon as Kamara enters what could be his final season in New Orleans.

  • Saints' Alvin Kamara: Taking passing-down snaps

Kamara has been getting most of the third-downs snaps with the starters at training camp, according to Jeff Duncan of Nola.com.

With Travis Etienne signed to be the team's lead runner, Kamara is left with passing downs as his obvious path to playing time, though he could also sub in for carries on early downs if he proves he still has gas in the tank. Last year, Kamara made 11 appearances and finished with career lows for both rushing yards per game (42.8) and receiving yards per game (16.9). The second number was barely more than half of his previous career low (16.9), but early signs suggest that coach Kellen Moore still thinks Kamara can contribute as a pass catcher. The 31-year-old reached an agreement with the Saints in July to alter his contract, with the result being a one-year, $6 million deal that includes $3.5 million guaranteed.
