Volpe logged his first MLB action since Aug. 1 after being called up from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre earlier Thursday. The 25-year-old knocked an RBI single in his first plate appearance and later made an even bigger splash with a grand slam in the seventh inning. Volpe started at second base Thursday, and he could get plenty of starts there in the short term with Jazz Chisholm (thumb) on the injured list. Volpe hasn't produced consistently at the plate as a major leaguer, though he had been red hot in the minors prior to his call-up, posting a 1.675 OPS with five homers and five steals over his past eight games with Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

The 25-year-old has thrived since moving down to Triple-A in early August, slashing .295/.393/.667 with 10 homers, 31 RBI, 22 runs and eight steals across 122 plate appearances with the RailRiders. He's worked exclusively as a shortstop throughout his four seasons in the majors but has lately been working at second and third base in the minors, which could open up more avenues to playing time once he rejoins the Pinstripes.

Volpe initially remained in the contest after being hit by a pitch before eventually being removed. It's unclear whether Volpe required X-rays, but either way it seems he's avoided a serious injury. The 25-year-old has not seen any action at a position other than shortstop since he played three games at third base and two at second base in A-ball in 2021, but Volpe increasing his versatility could be his best chance to contribute in the majors later this season.

The Yankees optioned Volpe to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre following Monday's 13-7 loss to the Cardinals.
Volpe didn't play Monday but had gone 0-for-11 with three strikeouts in his last three games, bringing his slash line down to an unremarkable .240/.325/.322 over 194 plate appearances in the big leagues. Rather than keeping Volpe on hand as part of a timeshare at shortstop with Jose Caballero, the Yankees plan to promote top prospect George Lombard from Triple-A to take over as their everyday option at the position, according to Jack Curry of YES Network. Caballero, meanwhile, is expected to shift into a utility role, and Volpe will get the chance to play on a regular basis at Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
Volpe is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Cubs.
Volpe started at shortstop the previous three contests, but he went hitless to bring his slash line down to .240/.325/.322 over 194 plate appearances on the season. While the Yankees should be able to clear a regular spot in the lineup for Volpe against left-handed pitching, his playing time versus righties will likely remain sporadic until he earns more opportunities.
