Pena suffered the unfortunate injury while stealing a base in a game with Double-A Biloxi earlier this month. Though the Brewers didn't disclose a timetable for Pena's rehab, it's the type of procedure that typically carries a 6-to-9 month absence. That puts the top prospect's status for the start of the 2027 season in limbo. Pena -- who turns 20 in November -- slashed .296/.380/.415 with three home runs, 35 stolen bases and a 30:58 BB:K over 70 games this season, with 51 of those contests coming at High-A Wisconsin.

Pena sustained a fracture in his left fibula during Double-A Biloxi's game against Birmingham on Saturday, Curt Hogg of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports.
Pena suffered the injury on a slide into third base and was carted off the field. The 19-year-old required a splint and the use of crutches to get around, but he's expected to begin his rehab program next week. The fracture continues a tough run of injury luck for Pena, who missed a month earlier this season after collapsing in the dugout due to overheating. He was promoted to Biloxi in mid-August and has a .268/.328/.339 slash line in his first 16 contests at Double-A.

Pena missed just over a month of action earlier this season after he collapsed during an April 22 game when he became overheated in the Wisconsin dugout, but fortunately, his development wasn't dramatically sidetracked by the scary incident. The 19-year-old shortstop finished his time in the Midwest League with a .298/.384/.420 slash line to go with two home runs and 27 stolen bases across 219 plate appearances.

Pena had essentially followed Jesus Made with each promotion prior to Made's late-2025 cup of coffee at Double-A and ensuing assignment there for the start of 2026. It was fully anticipated that Jesus Made would skip over the Arizona Complex League and start the year at Single-A, and it's notable that the Brewers also opted to send Pena directly to the Mudcats. Pena, an 18-year-old shortstop with plus-plus speed, hit .393 with one home run and 39 steals in 44 games in the Dominican Summer League. If he can access a bit more pop, he could be a big riser this season on prospect rankings.
