  • Rockies' Jake McCarthy: Returning to lineup

McCarthy (illness) will start in left field and bat seventh in Monday's game versus the Cubs. McCarthy didn't start any of the previous five contests as he battled back from an illness, though he appeared as a pinch runner in one of those tilts. The 28-year-old had made 23 consecutive starts prior to the aforementioned five-game absence from the lineup.

  • Rockies' Jake McCarthy: Remaining on bench Sunday

McCarthy (illness) is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Athletics. It's the fifth straight game out of the lineup for McCarthy, who was scratched Wednesday due to an illness. The 28-year-old may not have been in lineup Sunday regardless, with lefty Jeffrey Springs on the mound for the A's. McCarthy entered as a pinch runner and was caught stealing in Saturday's contest, so he should be back in the lineup soon.

  • Rockies' Jake McCarthy: Out again Friday

McCarthy (illness) isn't in the lineup for Friday's game against the Athletics. McCarthy will sit out a third consecutive game Friday while he continues to recover from an illness. Sterlin Thompson, Cole Carrigg and Troy Johnston will form Colorado's outfield trio with McCarthy out.

  • Rockies' Jake McCarthy: Remains out Thursday

McCarthy (illness) remains out of the lineup for Thursday's game versus the Cubs. McCarthy had to be scratched from Wednesday's lineup because he's under the weather, and he's still not feeling well enough to play in Thursday's series finale. Consider him day-to-day. Sterlin Thompson will play left field for the Rockies in McCarthy's stead.

  • Rockies' Jake McCarthy: Swipes 11th bag

McCarthy went 2-for-6 with a double, a run scored and a stolen base Friday against the Brewers. McCarthy accounted for most of his damage in the first inning, when he hit a leadoff double, stole third base and came around to score. He continues to deliver impressive production, maintaining a .284 average with two homers, 10 RBI and 13 runs scored across his last 20 games. McCarthy also has four stolen bases in that span and 11 for the season.

  • Rockies' Jake McCarthy: Tallies eighth stolen base

McCarthy went 2-for-3 with an RBI on Saturday against the Diamondbacks. McCarthy singled in a run in the second inning and stole his eighth base of the season five frames later after reaching base on a single. He remains on the strong side of a platoon playing primarily in left field, and he has at least one hit in eight of his last 11 appearances. In that span, McCarthy has gone 10-for-30 with 10 RBI, four runs scored and two stolen bases.

  • Rockies' Jake McCarthy: Not in lineup Thursday

McCarthy is not in the lineup for Thursday's tilt in Pittsburgh. The Pirates are going with a left-handed opener in Mason Montgomery before turning things over to a righty bulk reliever in Carmen Mlodzinski. McCarthy could enter mid-game once Mlodzinski comes in, but he'll begin the contest on the bench.

  • Rockies' Jake McCarthy: Smacks go-ahead grand slam

McCarthy went 2-for-4 with a grand slam and an RBI double in Thursday's 6-2 win over the Mets. McCarthy drove in five of Colorado's six runs Thursday. The outfielder tied the game at 2-2 with a two-out double in the sixth inning before putting the Rockies ahead in the eighth with a grand slam off Craig Kimbrel. After going 26 games without a homer to start the year, McCarthy's now gone deep in consecutive contests. He's slashing .275/.346/.507 with 14 RBI, eight runs scored and six stolen bases across 81 plate appearances while seeing regular at-bats against right-handed pitching.

  • Rockies' Jake McCarthy: Pops first homer

McCarthy went 1-for-4 with a two-run home run in Wednesday's 10-5 loss to the Mets. This was McCarthy's first homer of the season. The veteran outfielder has gone 10-for-27 (.370) over his last 10 games. Overall, he's batting .262 with a .784 OPS, nine RBI, seven runs scored, six stolen bases, five doubles and two triples across 77 plate appearances this season. McCarthy is filling the strong side of a platoon in center field for the Rockies.

  • Rockies' Jake McCarthy: Hitting bench Wednesday

McCarthy is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Reds. McCarthy has been poaching playing time in center field from Brenton Doyle of late, but the latter will get the starting nod Wednesday while he has the platoon advantage in his favor with lefty Brandon Williamson on the mound for Cincinnati. Unless he's used off the bench Wednesday, McCarthy will put a six-game hitting streak on hold.

  • Rockies' Brenton Doyle: Taking seat Sunday

Doyle is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Dodgers. Doyle will receive a breather after going 2-for-9 with a walk, two stolen bases and a run scored while starting in the Rockies' past three games. Jake McCarthy will cover center field in Doyle's stead Sunday.

  • Rockies' Jake McCarthy: Sitting versus righty

McCarthy is not in the lineup for Tuesday's contest versus the Astros. McCarthy batted leadoff in each of the Rockies' first five games this season, but he's seen his role reduced since then. The outfielder has started only three of the past six tilts and has been down in the No. 8 spot in the batting order for all of those starts. Jordan Beck will cover left field for the Rockies on Tuesday.

  • Rockies' Jake McCarthy: Receiving afternoon off

McCarthy is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Blue Jays. McCarthy will get a breather Wednesday after he had started in the outfield and batted leadoff in each of the Rockies' first five games, going a collective 2-for-18 with an RBI and three stolen bases over that stretch. The left-handed-hitting McCarthy could be left out of the lineup against southpaws, but he looks like he'll be a regular presence atop the batting order versus right-handed pitching.

  • Rockies' Jake McCarthy: Competing for starting role

McCarthy is expected to compete with Mickey Moniak to start in right field to begin the 2026 season, Kyle Newman of the Denver Post reports. The Rockies acquired McCarthy this offseason but have a versatile roster, so he could face significant competition for the starting role in right field. Moniak may be the primary designated hitter against right-handed pitching, so there could be room for both to start, but Willi Castro, Troy Johnston and Tyler Freeman also figure to factor in at a corner outfield spot. Most importantly, McCarthy will need to bounce back as a hitter to maintain a regular role after posting only a .592 OPS across 222 plate appearances with the Diamondbacks in 2025.

  • Rockies' Jake McCarthy: Dealt to Rockies

The Diamondbacks traded McCarthy to the Rockies on Saturday in exchange for Josh Grosz. McCarthy appeared in just 67 games for the Diamondbacks during 2025 and finished the season with a career-low .592 OPS across 222 plate appearances. Moving to Coors Field should help the 28-year-old's chances of bouncing back offensively in 2026, and he'll likely have more opportunities to start in the outfield with the Rockies as well -- primarily against right-handed starters.

  • Diamondbacks' Jake McCarthy: Potential trade candidate

According to sources, McCarthy or Alek Thomas will likely be traded during the offseason, Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic reports. The Diamondbacks would experience a cost savings by moving one of these arbitration-eligible center fielders and using a younger player as the backup. McCarthy has been the more dangerous hitter, while Thomas is considered the better glove. Among the potential replacements are Blaze Alexander, Jorge Barrosa and Tim Tawa. Jordan Lawlar, who is blocked at shortstop by Geraldo Perdomo and didn't handle third base well during a September cameo in 2025, has played a handful of games in center field during winter ball and is also an option.

  • Diamondbacks' Jake McCarthy: Pops fourth homer

McCarthy went 1-for-2 with a solo home run in Friday's 7-4 loss to the Padres. This was McCarthy's first homer since Aug. 19 versus the Guardians. He hit .194 (12-for-62) over 21 games between long balls, including just 3-for-18 (.167) in his last seven contests. The outfielder has produced a lackluster .207/.251/.343 slash line with four homers, 20 RBI, 18 runs scored and six stolen bases over 214 plate appearances in the majors this year, a massive step down from hitting .285 with a .749 OPS in 2024.

  • Diamondbacks' Jake McCarthy: Idle against southpaw

McCarthy is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Phillies. After starting in each of the last five games, the left-handed-hitting McCarthy will bow out of the lineup while the Phillies send southpaw Ranger Suarez to the hill. Tim Tawa will check in for McCarthy in left field and will bat seventh.

  • Diamondbacks' Jake McCarthy: Clears bases in loss

McCarthy went 1-for-4 with a triple and three RBI in Monday's 11-5 loss to San Francisco. McCarthy put the Diamondbacks on top early with a bases-clearing triple in the top of the second inning, but Arizona pitching was unable to protect the lead. McCarthy started in left field for the fourth straight game against a right-hander and is 2-for-12 with six RBI in those starts. He's expected to remain the primary left fielder with Lourdes Gurriel (knee) on the injured list and lost for the rest of the regular season. McCarthy is slashing .196/.246/.325 with six steals, three home runs, 18 RBI and 14 runs scored across 52 games.

  • Diamondbacks' Jake McCarthy: Knocks in two in win

McCarthy started in left field and went 1-for-2 with two RBI in Saturday's 5-1 win over the Red Sox. McCarthy's bases-loaded fielder's choice in the second inning plated the Diamondbacks' first run, and then he added a run-scoring single in the fourth. He's expected to serve as the primary left fielder against right-handers due to Lourdes Gurriel (knee) being done for the season, leaving Jorge Barrosa to see most of the opportunities against left-handed pitching.
