Player Outlook
On the surface, it might look like Josiah Gray took a significant step forward last year. He reached the 30-start plateau and stopped allowing quite as many home runs as his ERA dropped from 5.02 in 2022 to 3.91 in 2023. There is more to the story, though, and none of it is particularly encouraging. The most glaring issue is Gray's walk rate, which rose from 10.2 percent in 2022 to 11.5 percent in 2023, third-worst among the 58 major-league starters who logged more than 150 innings last season. Also concerning is that his strikeout rate fell from 23.7 percent in 2022 to 20.5 percent in 2023 despite various tweaks and modifications to his arsenal. A lack of command makes Gray a detriment when it comes to WHIP, and he doesn't miss enough bats to make up for it like a Blake Snell or Dylan Cease.

  • Nationals' Josiah Gray: Timeline pushed back

Nationals manager Dave Martinez said Tuesday that the club will wait to send Gray (elbow) for an MRI until around the All-Star break, Spencer Nusbaum of The Washington Post reports. The right-hander experienced elbow discomfort and more fatigue than normal during his rehab start with Triple-A Rochester on Sunday, and it appears he'll be shut down from throwing for at least the next couple weeks. Gray was in the latter stages of the rehab assignment and was soon expected to rejoin the Nationals, so it's a big blow for both him and the rotation. Depending on when he's actually sent for imaging, Gray shouldn't be expected back until at least sometime in August.

  • Nationals' Josiah Gray: Reports elbow discomfort

Gray experienced elbow discomfort and felt more fatigued than normal during Sunday's rehab start at Triple-A Rochester, Andrew Golden of The Washington Post reports. Gray will undergo testing in the coming days. Gray compared the discomfort to what he felt in April when he sustained the right flexor strain, a concerning sign for the 26-year-old, who was close to activation before the setback. Gray surrendered seven runs across three innings Sunday before reporting the pain. He'll continue to be evaluated over the coming days as the severity of the setback is determined.

  • Nationals' Josiah Gray: Remaining on assignment

Manager Dave Martinez said Wednesday that Gray (elbow) will make one or two more rehab starts with Triple-A Rochester, Bobby Blanco of MASNSports.com reports. Gray gave up one run in six innings during his most recent rehab start Tuesday, but the Nationals will keep him in the minors for at least one more outing before having him rejoin their rotation. Assuming he maintains a traditional four-day rest period between starts, Gray is lined up to make his next start Sunday and could then return to Washington on July 5.

  • Nationals' Josiah Gray: Cruises through latest rehab start

Gray (elbow) struck out four and allowed one run on four hits and zero walks over six innings in his rehab start Tuesday with Triple-A Rochester. Gray held Indianapolis scoreless through five frames before letting in a run in the sixth, but the right-hander still delivered the lengthiest and best of his four rehab starts since starting his minor-league assignment June 9. He covered 73 pitches in Tuesday's outing, a workload that should put him in line to handle a traditional starter's role when he returns from the 15-day injured list. Gray appears likely to rejoin the Washington rotation Monday or Tuesday against the Mets, as the Nationals are listing Patrick Corbin as the starter for Sunday's series finale in Tampa Bay, per Bobby Blanco of MASNSports.com.

  • Nationals' Josiah Gray: Making rehab appearance Tuesday

Gray (elbow) will make his next rehab start for Triple-A Rochester on Tuesday, Bobby Blanco of MASNSports.com reports. Gray is expected to work around six innings or 90 pitches Tuesday after firing five innings and 79 pitches in his last minor-league rehab start Wednesday with Double-A Harrisburg. If all goes according to plan, Gray could return from the 15-day injured list and slot back into the Washington rotation following Tuesday's outing.

  • Nationals' Josiah Gray: Set for another rehab start

Gray (elbow) will make another rehab start for Triple-A Rochester next week, Bobby Blanco of MASNSports.com reports. Gray was able to build up to 79 pitches over five innings during his latest rehab outing Wednesday, and the goal will be for him to get up to six innings or roughly 90 pitches. It's likely he makes his next minor-league start Tuesday, which could put him in line to return to Washington's rotation June 30 against the Rays.

  • Nationals' Josiah Gray: Goes five innings in rehab start

Gray (elbow) struck out five over five innings while allowing two earned runs on three hits and three walks in his rehab start Wednesday with Double-A Harrisburg. After building up to 79 pitches in what was the third start of his rehab assignment, Gray looks to be on the cusp of making his return from the 15-day injured list. According to Bobby Blanco of MASNSports.com, Gray reported back to Washington on Thursday and said he felt good following his latest rehab start, but the Nationals haven't yet decided whether he'll remain on assignment or rejoin the big-league rotation. If Washington chooses to activate Gray along with keeping a five-man rotation intact, the struggling Patrick Corbin could be sent to the bullpen to make room for the right-hander. Gray could be an option to start for the Nationals as soon as Monday in San Diego.

  • Nationals' Josiah Gray: Making third rehab start

Gray (elbow) is expected to throw 75-to-80 pitches in his rehab start with Double-A Harrisburg on Wednesday, Mark Zuckerman of MASNSports.com reports. The 26-year-old made his second rehab start Friday and allowed one run over four innings. Nationals manager Dave Martinez didn't specify whether Wednesday could be Gray's final rehab outing, but the skipper previously indicated the right-hander may need up to five starts in the minors before being activated from the injured list.

  • Nationals' Josiah Gray: Second rehab start set

Gray (elbow) is scheduled to make a rehab start Friday with Double-A Harrisburg, Mark Zuckerman of MASNSports.com reports. The 26-year-old opened his rehab assignment with Single-A Fredericksburg over the weekend and threw 43 pitches across three innings. Gray will continue to build up his workload in the minors, and manager Dave Martinez said up to five rehab starts could be necessary before the right-hander rejoins the Nationals.

  • Nationals' Josiah Gray: Gives up three runs in rehab start

Gray (elbow) struck out two while allowing three earned runs on three hits and one walk across three innings Sunday in a rehab start for Single-A Fredericksburg. Gray tossed 43 pitches (26 strikes) in the outing, his first at any level since landing on the 15-day injured list April 9 with a right flexor strain. He's expected to shift his rehab assignment to Double-A Harrisburg during the upcoming week, and Gray will likely require an additional start in the minors after that before making his return from the IL.

  • Nationals' Josiah Gray: Throwing 50-55 pitches in rehab

Gray (elbow) will throw 50-55 pitches during a rehab start with Single-A Fredericksburg on Sunday, Bobby Blanco of MASNSports.com reports. Gray got up to 76 pitches during a live BP session Tuesday but will have a smaller workload in his first rehab appearance. If all goes well Sunday, the right-hander will head to Double-A Harrisburg for another rehab start. Gray will likely need at least one more outing after the start at Double-A , making late June a feasible timeline for his return.

  • Nationals' Josiah Gray: Rehab assignment up next

Nationals manager Dave Martinez said Wednesday that Gray (elbow) has been cleared to begin a rehab assignment, and the first start is likely to come Sunday with Single-A Fredericksburg, Mark Zuckerman of MASNSports.com reports. The 24-year-old righty made just two starts this season before he landed on the injured list with an elbow strain, but he's now entering the final stage of his rehab program. Gray is expected to throw about four innings during his first outing, and he'll likely need several appearances in the minors before rejoining Washington's rotation.

  • Nationals' Josiah Gray: Could begin rehab assignment soon

Gray (elbow) could be cleared to begin a rehab assignment if a live batting practice session Tuesday goes well, Spencer Nusbaum of The Washington Post reports. Gray threw 76 pitches in a live BP last week and is slated to throw around 50 pitches in Tuesday's session as he continues to ramp back up. As long as he comes out of Tuesday's throwing session with no concerns, he'll likely be sent to a minor-league affiliate. Gray has been out since early April with a right flexor strain, but because he's already fairly stretched out, his rehab assignment might not last more than one or two starts.

  • Nationals' Josiah Gray: Throws live bullpen session

Gray (elbow) threw 76 pitches in a live batting practice session Thursday, Bobby Blanco of MASN Sports reports. Gray mixed in his offspeed and breaking pitches more frequently and increased his pitch count by 26 pitches compared to his first session. He's expected to stay on a five-day rotation, lining him up to throw again Tuesday. Following Tuesday's session, he's expected to progress to the next step of his recovery, presumably a rehab assignment.

  • Nationals' Josiah Gray: Throwing again Saturday

Gray (elbow) will throw a two-inning live batting practice Saturday, Andrew Golden of The Washington Post reports. Gray continues to recover from a flexor strain in his right elbow that has kept him out of action since April 4. His session Saturday is the next step in his throwing program, and if all goes well, the Nationals could look to send the 26-year-old right-hander on a rehab assignment.

  • Nationals' Josiah Gray: Throws from 75 feet

Gray (elbow) played catch from 75 feet Tuesday, Andrew Golden of The Washington Post reports. The right-hander is in the process of ramping up his throwing program after a brief shutdown period due to a flexor strain. Gray should soon progress to long toss before returning to mound work. He likely won't be able to rejoin Washington's rotation until at least mid-May.

  • Nationals' Josiah Gray: Lands on IL with flexor strain

Gray was placed on the 15-day injured list by the Nationals on Tuesday, retroactive to April 6, with a right flexor strain, Bobby Blanco of MASNSports.com reports. It's been a nightmarish start to the season for Gray. He has been tagged for 13 runs over 8.1 innings in his first two starts and now will miss, at minimum, the next couple weeks with an injury to his pitching arm. Gray had been slated to start Tuesday in San Francisco, but that responsibility now falls to Joan Adon.

  • Nationals' Josiah Gray: Loses second straight game

Gray (0-2) took the loss against Pittsburgh on Thursday, allowing six runs on seven hits and three walks while striking out three batters over 4.1 innings. Gray gave up seven runs over four innings in a season-opening loss to the Reds last Thursday, and he was only slightly better in his second start, which also ended in defeat. The right-hander at least kept the ball in the park after allowing two homers in his first outing, but he put far too many batters on the basepaths and didn't have his strikeout stuff working to help him get out of trouble. Gray had a modest breakout campaign last year with a career-best 3.91 ERA and his first trip to the All-Star Game, but the underlying metrics weren't strong, and his performance through two games this season justifies his placement on the waiver wire in most standard fantasy leagues.

  • Nationals' Josiah Gray: Rocked by Reds

Gray (0-1) took the loss after he lasted four innings and allowed seven runs on eight hits and two walks Thursday against Cincinnati. He struck out six. Gray got off to a rocky start to the new campaign, getting tagged by Nick Martini for home runs in the second and third innings as part of the abbreviated start. Although Gray posted a 3.91 ERA last season compared to a 5.02 ERA in 2022, Thursday's outing paired with an iffy spring makes his 2024 prospects seem bleak. He's tentatively scheduled to toe the rubber next against the Pirates.

  • Nationals' Josiah Gray: Tabbed for Opening Day

Manager Dave Martinez on Sunday named Gray the Nationals' starter for Opening Day against the Reds on March 28, Mark Zuckerman of MASNSports.com reports. Gray has 12 strikeouts over 7.1 innings during Grapefruit League play but has also allowed six runs and issued five walks. The 26-year-old posted a career-best 3.91 ERA last season, though his 1.46 WHIP and 4.5 BB/9 were less encouraging. Nonetheless, he'll start Opening Day for Washington, with Patrick Corbin set to take the mound in Game 2.
