Fried allowed a run in the first inning but settled in from there, throwing 54 of 78 pitches for strikes with 12 whiffs before departing in a 1-1 tie. Fried remained on a limited pitch count in his second game back from an over-two-month injury absence, so his 32-pitch first inning was far from ideal. The left-hander gave up all three of the runs he allowed in that first frame, though he allowed at least one baserunner in each of the other two innings in which he appeared. Fortunately for Fried, New York's offense got going after his departure to take him off the hook for a loss. Overall, Fried threw 66 pitches -- nine more than the amount he hurled in his return to action last Wednesday -- and he'll likely to continue to build up over his next couple starts until he's fully ramped back up. He's lined up to make his next appearance at Wrigley Field against the Cubs.

Fried was set to make a second rehab start Wednesday, and he was expected to throw 60 pitches in the outing according to manager Aaron Boone. The southpaw will instead return to a major-league mound for the first time since suffering a left elbow bone bruise in mid-May. Fried has posted an impressive 3.21 ERA and 1.01 WHIP with 50 strikeouts over 61.2 innings in 10 starts this season, so he'll be a welcomed addition to fantasy rotations, though it may take a few outings for him to work up to his regular workload.

Fried's first rehab start is Friday, and he'll be limited to around 50 pitches. He'll then make another start next week before the Yankees determine if the left-hander is ready to return to the rotation. Fried hasn't pitched since May 13 due to a bone bruise in his left elbow. Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Fried (elbow) threw a successful live batting practice session Saturday and is "likely" to pitch in a rehab game as soon as next Friday, Gary Phillips of the New York Daily News reports.
Per MLB.com, Fried reported to Double-A Somerset to throw his live session Saturday and tossed 44 pitches over three simulated innings. He'll presumably throw a bullpen session in the next day or two before the Yankees assign him to an affiliate to kick off a rehab assignment. Assuming he's able to build on his 44-pitch workload from Saturday, Fried may need just one or two rehab appearances before slotting back into the New York rotation. The veteran southpaw has been on the shelf since May 16 due to a bone bruise in his left elbow.
Fried (elbow) threw a successful 36-pitch live batting practice session Sunday and will face hitters again Thursday or Friday before embarking on a rehab assignment, Jorge Castillo of ESPN.com reports.
