One of the oldest courses on the PGA Tour's 2024 schedule will host the 2024 Rocket Mortgage Classic, which begins on Thursday at Detroit Golf Club in Michigan. Originally a six-hole course when it was first created in 1899, the course has evolved into a 7,370-yard, tree-lined test that will be hosting the tournament for a sixth straight year. Birdies are plentiful at Detroit Golf Club resulting in some low scores. In 2023, three players shot 24-under par through four rounds with Rickie Fowler eventually winning in a playoff.
This week, Tom Kim is the favorite in the 2024 Rocket Mortgage Classic odds at +1200. Cameron Young is the +1600 second choice in the Rocket Mortgage Classic 2024 field. Min Woo Lee (+2000), Akshay Bhatia (+2200) and Stephan Jaeger (+2500) round out the top five choices. One surprise: Nejad is completely fading Cameron Young, the second choice in the odds at +1600. The 27-year-old Young has one runner-up and five top-10 finishes in 16 events this season. He is coming off a T-9 at the Travelers Championship, where he shot an 11-under 59 in the third round.
But Nejad doesn't like that Young is erratic with the flat stick. He ranks 127th on the PGA Tour in strokes gained: putting (-0.240), one season after ranking 158th (-0.287). "You are certainly buying at the top of the market by taking Young this week, and that means there's not a ton of value in the number," Nejad told SportsLine.
Instead, Nejad is high on the chances of Taylor Pendrith, who is a +3000 longshot. No. 30 in the FedEx Cup standings, the 33-year-old Pendrith is playing arguably the best golf of his career. Over his last nine starts, he has five top-20 finishes. That includes a victory at the CJ Cup Byron Nelson in May, earning his first PGA Tour title in his 74th career start.
Nejad likes that Pendrith can both drive for show and putt for dough. He ranks 15th on the PGA Tour in driving distance (309.8 yards per drive) and fourth in strokes gained: putting (+0.714).
