NFL coaching and GM changes live updates: Who's interviewing where, what we're hearing, what could happen next

With the 2025 NFL regular season officially wrapped up, time is running out for certain NFL general managers and head coaches.

"Black Monday" -- the Monday after the regular season ends -- is when firings typically begin across the league, as 18 of the NFL's 32 teams see their seasons come to a close. And this year's "Black Monday" was a busy one, to say the least.

Two vacancies opened midseason -- the Giants after firing Brian Daboll and the Titans after letting go of Brian Callahan -- and six more have come open since.

  • On Sunday night, the Falcons dismissed Raheem Morris after just two seasons.
  • On Monday, the Browns ousted Kevin Stefanski after six seasons, the Raiders made Pete Carroll one-and-done in Las Vegas and the Cardinals ditched Jonathan Gannon after three years.
  • On Tuesday evening, the biggest domino fell: The Ravens fired John Harbaugh after 18 seasons.
  • And on Thursday, there was yet another firing, with the Dolphins dismissing Mike McDaniel.

As for general manager news, the Falcons also cleaned house by parting ways with Terry Fontenot, while the Dolphins created a GM opening by firing Chris Grier midseason.

Here's a look at the latest rumors and reports surrounding who could stay -- and who could go -- around the NFL in the coming days. We'll keep you updated with everything you need to know in the live blog below.

Did Jaxson Dart reveal the next Giants' head coach?

The Giants are an intriguing head-coaching vacancy for several reasons, but the biggest one is probably Jaxson Dart, the first-round rookie who showed signs he could become a franchise quarterback.

As for who will be coaching him? He appeared to reveal two names to an Ole Miss assistant on the sideline of the College Football Playoff semifinal on Thursday night.

Dolphins hire new GM: Is John Harbaugh no longer the favorite to be HC?

The Miami Dolphins will hire Jon-Eric Sullivan as their next general manager, per CBS Sports' Jonathan Jones. Sullivan is a longtime Green Bay Packers executive who started with the team in 2003 and has worked as the vice president of player personnel since 2022.

This is an interesting twist in the Dolphins coaching search now. Does Packers DC Jeff Hafley become the favorite for the job over John Harbaugh now?

Buccaneers fire five assistants while two others elect to retire

Bucs head coach Todd Bowles will be back for a fifth season in 2026, but several of his assistants won't be. The team announced the firing of the following five assistants on Thursday:

  • Josh Grizzard (OC)
  • Thomas McGaughey (STC)
  • Thaddeus Lewis (QBs)
  • Kevin Ross (CBs)
  • Charlie Strong (DL)

"These decisions are always difficult, but the disappointing end to the season required some changes to our coaching staff in order to ensure we live up to the high standards we have set here," Bowles said. "These coaches have all put in tremendous amount of work and effort, but unfortunately, the results were not there this past season. Our goal is to compete for championships every year, and it is my responsibility to make these tough decisions in order to reach those expectations. I want to thank these coaches for all that they have contributed to our success over the years, and I wish them well."

In addition, senior offensive assistant Tom Moore and safeties coach Nick Rapone elected to retire. Moore's coaching career spanned six decades, including a remarkable 48 years in the NFL.

"Tom Moore is a legend in the coaching profession, and it has been an honor and a privilege to have him on our staff," Bowles said. "Tom's incredible knowledge and understanding about the game is unmatched and he has served as an invaluable resource for our entire coaching staff over these past seven years. He always offered up unique perspectives and very helpful insights that assisted our coaches with their game preparation, but it will be the personal interactions I had with him every day that I will miss the most."

Tampa Bay's most intriguing coach search will be for its offensive coordinator. Rams passing game specialist Nathan Scheelhaase, Ravens offensive coordinator Todd Monken and Falcons offensive coordinator Zac Robinson are some names to watch for the position, per NFL Media.

Mike McDaniel landing spots: Could he get another head coaching job?

Now that we've touched on what's next for the Dolphins after firing Mike McDaniel, it's time to turn the focus to McDaniel himself. Despite his exit in Miami, he remains a respected offensive mind around the league and shouldn't have much trouble finding his next opportunity.

Tyler Sullivan identified five potential landing spots for McDaniel, two of which we'll break down below.

Commanders OC

"There are multiple connections within that organization to the former Dolphins coach. He worked on Dan Quinn's staff as an offensive assistant from 2015 to 2016 when the Commanders head coach was leading the Falcons. So, from a coaching standpoint, there is familiarity with McDaniel.

"That's also the case on the personnel side, as well with general manager Adam Peters. Before coming to Washington, Peters was the vice president of player personnel for the 49ers from 2017 to 2020. McDaniel was the run game coordinator under Kyle Shanahan throughout Peters' tenure before ascending to OC in 2021.

"The chance to coach an offense around Jayden Daniels would certainly be appealing to McDaniel."

Wherever Robert Salah gets hired (OC)

"This is a bit of a wild-card scenario because we don't know whether Robert Saleh will actually be hired this cycle. However, he has received interest from teams.

"If he does land a job, McDaniel would make a lot of sense as his offensive coordinator. The two worked together in San Francisco under Kyle Shanahan from 2017 to 2020. Saleh was working as the defensive coordinator at the time, and McDaniel was the run game coordinator.

"So, there is familiarity between the two, and given that Saleh comes from the defensive side of the ball, it'd be wise for him to secure one of the better offensive minds in the league as he potentially embarks on his second stint as an NFL head coach."

Dolphins coaching candidates

Mike McDaniel is officially out in Miami, so who will replace him? CBS Sports NFL writer Tyler Sullivan targeted five coaches to watch, two of whom we'll detail below:

John Harbaugh (former Ravens HC) -- "There are a couple of angles that have our antenna raised when it comes to John Harbaugh possibly being the top target of the Dolphins, and maybe even the catalyst for this McDaniel firing.

"First, there is the timing of it all. As we noted above, it felt like McDaniel was going to last at least another year, particularly after making it through Black Monday. Fast-forward to Thursday, and he's been kicked to the curb. What's one thing that's changed between Black Monday and Thursday? John Harbaugh became available. Baltimore parted ways with its long-time head coach on Tuesday, and that decision has turned the hiring cycle on its head.

"While the Ravens feel like they need a new voice in their organization, Harbaugh instantly became the top coach on the market for other clubs, and maybe it forced organizations currently employing a head coach -- like the Dolphins -- to reevaluate."

Vance Joseph (Broncos DC) -- "Vance Joseph was arguably the top coaching candidate on the market before John Harbaugh came into the equation. The 53-year-old coach is looking for his second kick at leading an NFL organization after initially breaking in with the Broncos in 2017 and only lasting two seasons.

"While that first stint didn't play out as well as he'd hoped, Joseph still has a strong reputation across the league and has developed the 2025 Broncos (returned to the team as its DC under Sean Payton in 2023) into one of the best units in the NFL.

"Joseph also has ties to the Dolphins organization, serving as their defensive coordinator in 2016 before being hired by Denver to be their head coach."

Ravens to interview Brian Flores: Why hasn't the Vikings DC received more interest?

Could it be because of Flores' lawsuit against the NFL and three of their teams? This is from our story in 2022:

Former Miami Dolphins head coach Brian Flores, who was fired this offseason and has been interviewing for several open positions, is suing the NFL, the New York Giants, the Dolphins and Denver Broncos for racial discrimination.

The lawsuit filed states that the league "remains rife with racism" and that "in certain critical ways, the NFL is racially segregated and is managed much like a plantation." It points out that none of the 32 NFL owners are black and that they profit from the labor of players, 70% of whom are Black. Flores said he is deciding to stand up for himself, and he hopes others join him.

"God has gifted me with a special talent to coach the game of football, but the need for change is bigger than my personal goals," Flores said regarding the lawsuit in a release, per NFL Media's Mike Giardi. "In making the decision to file the class action complaint today, I understand that I may be risking coaching the game that I love and that has done so much for my family and me. My sincere hope is that by standing up against systemic racism in the NFL, others will join me to ensure that positive change is made for generations to come."

More context surrounding the Dolphins firing Mike McDaniel

ESPN's Jeff Darlington provided some additional context about the Dolphins firing Mike McDaniel and what's next for the franchise:

Some context into the Dolphins' decision to fire Mike McDaniel, per multiple people involved in the decision: Owner Steve Ross met with McDaniel on Tuesday, and the outcome of the meeting left Ross very conflicted. He really likes Mike -- "loves his intelligence and offensive mind" -- but Tuesday's meeting resulted in some hard thoughts. Ross didn't feel like the results were there, and despite the end-of-year production, Ross simply wasn't comfortable moving forward with the "status quo."

Now for the elephant in the room: I'm told the Dolphins have not yet been in touch with John Harbaugh or anyone in his camp, and people close to the decision are adamant this decision to move away from McDaniel is independent of Harbaugh's availability.

I'm told the Dolphins will conduct the head coaching search after a GM is in place, which should be in the next few days. Yes, it obviously could lead to discussions with Harbaugh. And yes, one of the GM candidates (Chad Alexander) is very close to Harbaugh. But people close to the situation tell me this decision to fire Mike would have been made either way.

Moments later, Darlington posted this:

BREAKING: Dolphins fire Mike McDaniel

The Dolphins have fired Mike McDaniel after four seasons, per multiple reports. He went 35-33 during that stretch, which included making the playoffs during his first two years there.

There are now eight head coaching vacancies -- one-forth of the league.

  • Baltimore
  • Cleveland
  • Las Vegas
  • Miami
  • New York Giants
  • Tennessee

Expect McDaniel to be a leading candidate for offensive coordinator roles -- if not to garner interest for another head coaching job.

Cowboys defensive coordinator candidates to watch

With Matt Eberflus out in Dallas after one season as defensive coordinator, the Cowboys will spend the coming weeks searching for his replacement. CBS Sports NFL writer Garrett Podell identified five coaches to watch, two of whom we'll detail below.

Brian Flores: Vikings defensive coordinator

"The Vikings thrived under Brian Flores' complex scheme, which blitzed at the highest rate in the NFL (49.5%) this season and helped power Minnesota into racking up 49 sacks, tied for the fourth most in the league. His coaching job was even more impressive when noting how brutal quarterback J.J. McCarthy was in his first season as the team's starter in 2025. McCarthy ranked dead last in the NFL in completion percentage (57.6%), touchdown-to-interception ratio (0.9; 11 touchdowns, 12 interceptions) and passer rating (72.6)."

Raheem Morris: former Falcons head coach

"Before being fired as the Falcons head coach on Sunday, Raheem Morris was the Rams' defensive coordinator from 2021 to 2023. The Rams were the Super Bowl LVI champions to conclude the 2021 NFL season with Morris as their DC. That year he coached one of the best defensive tackles of all time in three-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year Aaron Donald. In Dallas, he would have All-Pro Quinnen Williams, three-time Pro Bowler Kenny Clark and the up-and-coming Osa Odighizuwa."

Jim Harbaugh gushes over Jesse Minter -- so why no interview requests yet?

The Los Angeles Chargers defense has been elite this season on an expected points added (EPA) basis, ranking third in the NFL in EPA per rush, eighth in total EPA and ninth in EPA per pass, per SumerSports.

A major reason for that success is 42-year-old defensive coordinator Jesse Minter, who has spent the past two seasons in Los Angeles after following Jim Harbaugh from Michigan.

Minter is widely viewed as a head coaching candidate, with Harbaugh revealing Wednesday that "several" teams have reached out about interviewing him. Harbaugh made it clear why.

"Tremendous knowledge of the game. Great teammate. ...The general manager-head coach relationship ... is gonna be tremendous with him, which is really important. His ability to motivate in all aspects. Teacher. It's always about the team. There's no ego there. You gotta box to check it, check it with Jesse. ... Several have reached out, interview requests. No surprise."

So why haven't any interview requests been reported yet? CBS Sports lead NFL insider Jonathan Jones addressed that question in his latest story on coaching candidates still working during Wild Card Weekend.

Jim Harbaugh calls brother John the 'best coach I've ever seen'

Jim Harbaugh, the head coach of the Chargers, is preparing for his team's wild-card matchup against the Patriots on Sunday night. But he still found time to publicly support his older brother, John, who was fired by the Ravens on Tuesday.

"John Harbaugh's the best coach I know, best coach I've ever seen," Jim Harbaugh said Wednesday. "And you may say 'OK, I'm his brother so I might be biased,' but then you have somebody like Tony Dungy ... Wouldn't we all like that? Wouldn't we all like somebody like Tony Dungy, especially Tony Dungy himself, to say that? It's great, seeing that kind of outpouring of support and just so cool to see all my brother's accomplishments and be recognized for that. As I told him, whatever team he goes to is gonna be formidable. I just hope it's in the NFC."

Here's the social media post from Tony Dungy, who criticized Baltimore for moving on from John Harbaugh after 18 seasons.

Jim Harbaugh is confident his brother will be a head coach next season, and there's plenty of evidence to back that up: as many as nine teams are reportedly believed to have interest in John Harbaugh, even though only six openings currently exist outside of Baltimore.

Todd Bowles back as Bucs head coach

A day after a Falcons win eliminated the Buccaneers in Week 18, head coach Todd Bowles stood at the podium and explained why he's still the right person to lead the franchise.

"All I can do is coach and be myself," Bowles said on Monday. "I've earned the chance. I've won three straight division titles, so that says a lot, as far as I'm concerned. But I don't really have a message for fans other than true fans are true fans. We're going to try and do our best to go out there and win for them. They're going to feel how they feel. That's not the coach's problem. The coach's problem is to make the team better. That's all I'm looking forward to."

The Bucs did win three straight NFC South crowns from 2022-24, but they posted a 27-24 record during that stretch and failed to win a playoff game. This season, Tampa Bay jumped out to a 6-2 start before losing seven of its final nine games to miss the postseason.

Still, Bowles will be back for his fifth season in 2026, per CBS Sports lead NFL Insider Jonathan Jones. Bowles has already met with ownership and has been holding individual meetings with his coaches Wednesday, according to The Tampa Bay Times' Rick Stroud, who says there could be significant changes.

QB-needy teams rejoice: Ty Simpson declares for the 2026 NFL Draft

Of the seven teams looking for a head coach, two of them (Raiders, Browns) definitely need a quarterback, with two others (Cardinals, Falcons) potentially also in the market for a signal-caller.

Good news for those clubs: Alabama's Ty Simpson has declared for the draft. Here's our scouting report of Simpson, courtesy of lead draft analyst Mike Renner:

"Ty Simpson may not have finished his 2025 season on a high note after getting trounced by Indiana's vaunted defense, but his body of work is still very intriguing for a first-year starter. His 28-to-5 touchdown-to-interception ratio is indicative of how he kept the ball out of harm's way, even when things went south at times."
