Miami's outlook altered
Miami has been a member of the ACC since 2004 but has never won the conference. The Hurricanes could still get that milestone checked off in 2025, but the path to get there just got more complicated. Miami is officially out of margin for error if it wants to reach the league championship game. With six games still remaining on the Hurricanes' conference docket, that's an uncomfortable place to be.
But suffering a second loss would likely, at best, leave Miami's spot in the conference title game up to a tiebreaker. And it's possible that a conference record of 6-2 would eliminate the 'Canes from league title contention altogether. Trips to SMU on Nov. 1 and to Pitt on Nov. 29 look like the toughest tests remaining.
With regards to its College Football Playoff hopes, Miami could potentially still make the 12-team field if it wins out to close the regular season but loses in the ACC Championship Game. The Hurricanes would be 11-2 in that scenario. That's the same record SMU had when it reached the playoff last season after losing to Clemson in the ACC Championship Game. The 2-loss Mustangs reached the CFP with a non conference schedule weaker than what Miami played. The Hurricanes beat Notre Dame, South Florida and Florida during their 5-0 start.
