College football scores, rankings, highlights in Week 8: Notre Dame outlasts USC, Texas avoids major upset

The 2025 college football season has officially surpassed the midway point of the regular season after the conclusion of a thrilling Week 8 slate. Among the games that will shape the College Football Playoff picture was the final matchup between No. 13 Notre Dame and No. 20 USC for the foreseeable future.

The Fighting Irish opened the season with losses to Miami and Texas A&M and have since won five consecutive games following a 34-24 win over the Trojans behind a monster performance by star running back Jeremiyah Love. That game was part of five ranked-on-ranked games on the schedule -- with that matchup possibly being the most consequential due to the CFP stakes.

Elsewhere, upsets happened that could throw a wrench into conference title game outlooks. Arizona State needed late heroics to upset No. 7 Texas Tech, while No. 9 Georgia outscored No. 5 Ole Miss 17-0 in the fourth quarter to come away with a 43-35 win. No. 21 Texas survived a serious upset bid by Kentucky with a 17-14 victory in overtime, which marked the first road win for quarterback Arch Manning as a starter.

One of the stories of the season has been the play of No. 17 Vanderbilt. The Commodores delivered a 31-24 win over No. 10 LSU to move to 6-1 on the season. Speaking of the SEC, No. 4 Texas A&M will likely move in the polls on Sunday after coming away with a 45-42 road win over Arkansas.

While those results were notable, the biggest upset of the day came in Birmingham, Alabama. UAB pulled off a dramatic 31-24 win over No. 22 Memphis as a 23.5-point underdog in interim coach Alex Mortensen's debut. Mortensen took over the program this week after UAB fired former coach Trent Dilfer last weekend, after the program got off to a 2-4 start. This loss likely puts Memphis behind the eight-ball to earn a bid to the CFP.

CBS Sports was here every step of the way to update you with the latest scores, highlights and storylines throughout the evening.

Arizona State pulls off thrilling 26-22 upset of No. 7 Texas Tech

Another unbeaten team has fallen in college football, as the Big 12 favorite Texas Tech went to Tempe and lost to last year's Big 12 champs Arizona State, 26-22, in a wild finish in the desert.

The Red Raiders' offense was stuck in the mud for much of the game, and Arizona State seemed to have the game in hand as they led 19-7 midway through the fourth quarter. Trailing by two scores, Texas Tech methodically worked its way down the field for a touchdown to pull within five, but with just four minutes to go they needed a quick stop to get the ball back.

They got that after sacking Sam Leavitt on third down, forcing an Arizona State punt with plenty of time remaining. That punt was a poor one and bounced near midfield where the Red Raiders scooped it off the bounce and returned it all the way to the 12 to put them in the red zone immediately. Will Hammond found Reggie Virgil in the corner of the end zone for a quick touchdown then ran it in himself for the two-point conversion to go up 22-19.

However, because the punt return set Texas Tech up so quickly, Arizona State had plenty of time themselves to drive down the field to try and win the game or force overtime. After picking up one first down, Sam Leavitt found Jordyn Tyson for a 33-yard gain on fourth-and-2 to put the Sun Devils in the red zone. A pass interference in the end zone set up a first-and-goal, with Raleek Brown punching it in on second-and-goal from the 1 to put Arizona State back on top, 26-22.

Texas Tech was able to move it into Arizona State territory in the final seconds, but Hammond's Hail Mary from the 28 came up empty as the ball bounced into the air and harmlessly to the turf to give the Sun Devils a huge win.

With the loss, Texas Tech is now 6-1 and falls behind BYU and Cincinnati at the top of the Big 12 standings. The ever-chaotic Big 12 seemed to have one clearly superior team in the Red Raiders coming into this week, but now things look even more fluid in the highly competitive and even conference.

Missouri makes a stand in overtime win against Auburn

Final: No. 16 Missouri 23, Auburn 17

Auburn took Missouri to the brink at home in Week 8, but the visiting Tigers ultimately won out thanks to a defensive stand in the second overtime period. Missouri actually had a chance to win it in its first possession of overtime, but kicker Robert Meyers matched Auburn's missed field goal with his own 38-yard miss.

That put the pressure back on Missouri to deliver. The Tigers did just that, as quarterback Beau Pribula scored on a scramble from 3 yards out.

Auburn's final play of the night ended in a fitting manner: quarterback Jackson Arnold was sacked on a desperation fourth-and-8 attempt. Now Auburn is guaranteed to finish without a winning record in conference play for a fifth straight season. That has not happened since 1944-52.

Missouri, meanwhile, kept its College Football Playoff hopes alive. Coach Eli Drinkwitz's squad hits the road again in Week 9 for another huge test against No. 17 Vanderbilt.

BYU wins "Holy War" over Utah

FINAL: No. 15 BYU 24, No. 23 Utah 21

One of the best games on the Week 8 slate lived up to the hype, as No. 15 BYU picked up a huge rivalry win over Utah. The Cougars are now 7-0 (4-0 Big 12) and moved into a first-place tie with Cincinnati atop the conference standings with the win. BYU is the only undefeated team remaining in the Big 12.

BYU quarterback Bear Bachmeier finished 13 of 22 for 166 yards and a touchdown and ran for 64 yards and another score on the ground. Bachmeier scored on a 22-yard touchdown run with 4:22 remaining to extend the lead to 10. Utah dropped to 5-2 with the loss and now sits at 2-2 in Big 12 play heading into the second half of the season.

Notre Dame stays alive in the CFP hunt with win over USC

FINAL: No. 13 Notre Dame 34, No. 20 USC 24

The final matchup between Notre Dame and USC for the foreseeable future lived up to the hype despite less-than-ideal weather conditions. Notre Dame came away with a 34-24 win over USC to stay alive in the College Football Playoff picture. After starting the season with consecutive losses to Miami and Texas A&M, Notre Dame has won five in a row.

Notre Dame star running back Jeremiyah Love had himself a day on the ground. Love finished with 228 rushing yards and a touchdown on 24 carries, as his team racked up over 300 yards on the ground. A huge play in the game was a 100-yard kickoff return touchdown by Jadarian Price late in the third quarter to give his team the lead back for good.

USC was coming off a statement win over Michigan at home. The Trojans have a key game against Oregon later in the season that could make or break their CFP hopes.

UCLA picks up a third straight win, beating Maryland 20-17 on a last-minute drive for a FG

UCLA's miraculous turnaround continues as it picked up its third consecutive win (all in Big Ten play) by beating Maryland on Saturday night in a 20-17 thriller.

The Bruins took a 17-10 lead in the fourth quarter, but saw Maryland tie the game with a touchdown drive with under a minute to play that seemingly was going to lead to overtime. However, the Bruins had a bit more magic left, as Nico Iamaleava (who left at the end of the previous drive with an apparent knee injury) came back onto the field to lead the Bruins all the way down the field to set up a game-winning 23-yard field goal.

Iamaleava finished the game with 221 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions through the air, but made some big throws when they were needed most late and the Bruins picked up another Big Ten victory.

On the other side, it's a third consecutive close loss for Maryland, which had been leading or tied in the fourth quarter of all three contests, only to see them slip away in painfully familiar fashion.

Texas escapes upset-minded Kentucky

FINAL: No. 21 Texas 16, Kentucky 13

Mason Shipley's 45-yard field goal from the left hash in overtime helped the Longhorns overcome an ugly performance across the board to move to 5-2 overall and 2-1 in the SEC. College football's preseason No. 1 managed just 179 yards over 55 plays against the Wildcats, who remain winless in conference play. Texas stuffed Kentucky on fourth-and-goal from the 1-yard line in overtime before the game-winning kick. The Wildcats have now lost nine consecutive SEC home games under Mark Stoops dating back to the 2023 season.

Curry College RB sets NCAA single-game record

Montie Quinn shatters previous mark with 522 yards, 7 TDs

Division III Curry College's star running back ran wild during Saturday's 71-27 win over Nichols College, setting a new single-game NCAA record across all levels with a jaw-dropping rushing performance. Quinn's touchdown total included runs of 64, 30, 76, 84, 58, 2, and 85 yards.

Quinn averaged 26.1 yards per carry and broke the previous record set by Oklahoma's Samaje Perine, who galloped his way to 427 yards on Nov. 22, 2014 against Kansas. He has rushed for for 1,450 yards and 17 touchdowns in six games this season.

No. 18 Virginia escapes with a 22-20 win over Washington State

The No. 18 team in the country avoided becoming the latest ranked squad to get upset on Saturday, as Virginia erased a 10-point fourth quarter deficit at home to Washington State in a 22-20 win thanks to a game-winning safety.

The Cavaliers struggled offensively for much of the game, but found some life in the final quarter on both sides of the ball. After a touchdown drive to cut the deficit to three, they got an interception in plus territory to set up the game-tying field goal.

After their game-tying field goal, Washington State ended up backed up on their own 2-yard line after a bizarre sequence where the other kick returner called a fair catch as his teammate fielded the ball and was set to run up field. The Cougars followed that up with a false start and then had a running play stuffed in the end zone for a safety that put Virginia up for the first time all game at 22-20.

Virginia was able to pick up a first down on the ensuing possession after the safety kickoff and then kneeled out a win to get to 6-1 on the season and hold on to a top 25 ranking for another week. For Washington State, it's a second straight week coming up just short of an upset on the road against a ranked opponent. They played Ole Miss tough a week ago and then had to travel further east to face Virginia and nearly knocked them off, but will head back to Pullman empty-handed from their long road trip, sitting at 3-4 on the season.

BYU holds slight edge against Utah in defensive battle

Half: No. 15 BYU 10, No. 23 Utah 7

Points are at a premium in 2025's installment of The Holy War. BYU takes a narrow lead into halftime after some poor clock management forced it into a 26-yard field goal from kicker Will Ferrin. The Cougars had first-and-10 on Utah's 11-yard line with 44 seconds left in the half and no timeouts.

They, inexplicably, ran the ball twice for a gain of four yards. Given that BYU had no other means to stop the clock, quarterback Bear Bachmeier had to scramble to run a spike play, which he executed in enough time to allow Ferrin to nail the field goal. Bachmeier was visibly frustrated coming off the field.

Still, BYU has at least a bit of momentum as it heads to the locker room. Its defense has played well enough to hold a three-point lead. Utah finished the first half with 238 yards, but it failed to convert on two fourth downs and went three-and-out on its other non-touchdown drive.

Ahmad Hardy gives Missouri halftime lead

HALF: No. 16 Missouri 10, Auburn 7

The SEC's top rusher was limited to 38 yards on 15 carries in the first half, but his 2-yard touchdown run early in the second quarter pushed Missouri ahead of Auburn for the first time. The last Power Four team to play its first road game this season, Missouri is trying to stay near the top of the SEC standings despite losing last time out against Alabama. Auburn is trying to avoid an 0-4 start in SEC play during a pivotal game for Hugh Freeze.

Alabama's defends hands Tide commanding halftime lead

Half: No. 6 Alabama 23, No. 11 Tennessee 7

Tennessee could not have asked for a more disastrous end to the first half. The Vols had the ball on Alabama's goal line with nine seconds left and a few downs to work with. They could have, at the very least, kicked a field goal to put some much-needed points on the board and cut Alabama's lead down to one possession.

Then quarterback Joey Aguilar, who had played well for a majority of the first half, made his biggest mistake of the season. Aguilar took a snap from under center, faked a handoff to the running back and then lofted a pass into the flats that was intercepted by Alabama cornerback Zabien Brown.

With all of Tennessee's players so close to the end zone, Brown took off and returned the interception 99 yards for a touchdown. To make matters worse for Tennessee, Alabama gets the ball to start the second half, and the Crimson Tide have scored touchdowns on two of their four offensive drives.

ND ahead of USC at halftime

HALF: No. 13 Notre Dame 14, No. 20 USC 13

We have reached halftime from South Bend, and despite the less-than-ideal weather inside and around the stadium, the game is still going. Notre Dame will take a 14-13 lead into the locker room despite turning the ball over in the red zone just minutes before halftime. USC quarterback Jayden Maiava finished 14 of 24 for 177 yards and a touchdown, while Notre Dame star running back Jeremiyah Love went for 134 rushing yards and a touchdown on just 10 carries.

This game has major College Football Playoff implications. Huge half coming up.

Texas A&M remains unbeaten, holds off Arkansas

FINAL: No. 4 Texas A&M 45, Arkansas 42

Texas A&M is the SEC's last remaining unbeaten this season following a win at Arkansas, pushing the Aggies closer to the top spot in the polls after Week 8. Five undefeated teams lost this weekend, including Ole Miss at Georgia, but Texas A&M avoided an upset with points in every quarter, including a decisive touchdown run from Rueben Owens with 6:52 to play to put the Aggies ahead 45-35.

The Razorbacks are 11 points from being 5-1 this season following another close loss in a campaign full of them. Under interim coach Bobby Petrino, Arkansas piled up 527 yards of offense, punctuated by a pair of 100-yard rushers and five total touchdowns from quarterback Taylen Green.

The Aggies scored on seven of their nine possessions, including four total touchdowns from Marcel Reed and two scores from Owens. Owens received the bulk of carries in place of Le'Veon Moss, who suffered an ankle injury in last week's win over Florida and is out several weeks, according to Aggies coach Mike Elko.

No. 21 Texas in a defensive struggle with Kentucky

Halftime: No. 21 Texas 7, Kentucky 0

Once again, the Longhorns defense is doing a lot of the heavy lifting as the offense sputters. These two teams have combined for seven punts to this point, and Texas' only touchdown drive went 5 yards following a 45-yard punt return from Ryan Niblett.

The Wildcats actually outgained the Longhorns 180-93 in the first half, and Texas quarterback Arch Manning completed just seven of his 15 pass attempts for 70 yards. On the ground, the Horns could only muster 23 yards for an average of 1.3 yards per attempt.

Kentucky quarterback Cutter Boley had a respectable start, throwing for 138 yards while completing 76.2% of his throws against a tough defense, but his one blemish was an interception near midfield.

Penn State blocks a 66-yard FG attempt by Iowa and returns it for a TD to go up 14-10 at halftime

It has not been an enjoyable season for Penn State football, and on Saturday they had to go into Kinnick Stadium with a backup QB and an interim head coach to face the Iowa Hawkeyes. With just a few seconds left in the first half, Iowa led 10-7 and was at midfield when they opted to try a 66-yard field goal, figuring, "what's the worst that can happen?"

This. This is the worst that can happen.

A Penn State DL got a big paw up in the air and blocked it (because the kicker had to try and drive it low given the distance) and the ball shot back behind the kicker and bounced straight into the hands of Elliott Washington Jr., who took it to the house to give the Nittany Lions the lead.

It has been a game where Iowa has dictated the pace, holding Penn State under 100 yards of total offense in the first half, but they trail because of a shockingly poor decision from Kirk Ferentz to try a 66-yard field goal as time expired.

No. 18 Virginia on upset watch vs. Washington State

Half: Washington State 17, No. 18 Virginia 7

Is Washington State going to finish off its upset bid this time? The Cougars had Ole Miss on the ropes last week before falling 24-21. Now, they lead Virginia on the road at halftime. Washington State struck early, with quarterback Zevi Eckhaus connecting with Joshua Meredith for a 32-yard touchdown on the opening drive. Eckhaus added a 1-yard rushing score midway through the second quarter before a 37-yard field goal gave the Cougars a 17-7 lead heading into the locker room.

Although Virginia has a loss on its résumé, it remains unbeaten in the ACC, with the defeat to North Carolina State coming in a non-conference tilt. This isn't a must-win for the Cavaliers, but it matters for momentum as they push for positioning in the ACC race.

Florida comes away with a dramatic win over Mississippi State

FINAL: Florida 23, Mississippi State 21

Florida came away with a dramatic 23-21 win over Mississippi State after it looked grim in the final moments. Mississippi State had a chance to run out the clock and kick a potential game-winning field goal. Instead, quarterback Blake Shapen threw it right to Florida defensive lineman Michai Boireau for an interception. Florida was able to run out the final 25 seconds and preserve the win.

The Gators entered this game having lost four of their last five games, which included a 34-17 loss to Texas A&M. Florida now improves to 3-4 (2-2 SEC), while Mississippi State fell to 4-3 (1-2).

UAB delivers massive upset win over No. 22 Memphis

FINAL: UAB 31, No. 22 Memphis 24

One of the biggest upsets of the 2025 college football season is complete. UAB stunned No. 22 Memphis with a 31-24 victory in Alex Mortensen's first game as the interim coach since taking over for Trent Dilfer, who was fired last weekend after his team dropped to 2-4 (0-3 American).

Memphis, a 23.5-point favorite, had a chance to tie the game in the final moments. However, UAB came up with a stop on fourth and goal to seal the win.

UAB quarterback Ryder Burton finished 20 of 27 for 251 yards and three touchdowns in the win. This game is certain to shake up the College Football Playoff race. Memphis entered the week as the second-highest-ranked Group of Six team (behind South Florida). Memphis suffered its first loss at the hands of UAB, which could significantly impact its chances of being one of the 12 teams selected in the playoffs down the line.

Indiana shakes off slow start to dominate Michigan State, 38-13

College football fans raised some eyebrows on Saturday afternoon when they saw Michigan State take a 10-7 lead in the second quarter on No. 3 Indiana, but the Hoosiers shook off any hangover from their big win at Oregon from that point on, cruising to a 38-13 win at home to stay undefeated.

Once Indiana's offense found a rhythm, they were unstoppable, as Fernando Mendoza lit up Michigan State's porous secondary to the tune of 24 completions on 28 attempts for 332 yards and four touchdowns. A few of those touchdowns came on explosives, as Mendoza found receivers streaking past the Spartans' secondary for scores as Indiana hit their stride and pulled away.

Indiana's defense likewise bowed up after allowing a pair of early scoring drives, holding Michigan State scoreless for almost the entire second half until a field goal with inside a minute to play got the Spartans some late points.

That kick was significant to some, as it moved Michigan State back inside the spread number (+25.5), although a late cover might not be enough to cool off Jonathan Smith's hot seat. Michigan State falls to 3-4 on the season with the loss and have lost four in a row to drop to 0-4 in Big Ten play.

Indiana avoids a potential trap game after their win on the road against Oregon and proves that this team has the kind of focus and talent needed to dodge the kind of pitfalls that can derail seasons. At 7-0 overall and 4-0 in Big Ten play, they keep pace with Ohio State and look destined for a Big Ten title showdown in two months.

Arkansas hanging around vs. No. 4 Texas A&M

Halftime: No. 4 Texas A&M 21, Arkansas 20

For much of the first half, it looked like the Aggies might run away with this one. Late in the second quarter, Marcel Reed found Nate Boerkircher for a touchdown to take a 21-6 lead, and it seemed as though the wheels were coming off for the Razorbacks.

Then Arkansas quarterback Taylen Green, with a brace on his right knee, engineered an impressive touchdown drive capped off by a 27-yard run by Green himself. Texas A&M had done a great job of containing Green until that point, but he finally beat them to get Arkansas back in the game.

In the final moments of the first half, Arkansas forced a quick three-and-out from the Texas A&M offense, and got the ball back. Following a clutch 57-yard run from Mike Washington Jr., Green threw a touchdown pass to O'Mega Blake with two seconds left in the second quarter.

This matchup always seems to get sideways, and it seems like we're headed that way again this year. It's shaping up to be a chaotic second half in Fayetteville.

No. 1 Ohio State rides career-day from Julian Sayin, shuts out Wisconsin

Final: No. 1 Ohio State 34, Wisconsin 0

No. 1 Ohio State left no doubt it's the best team in the country with a 34-0 win at Wisconsin on Saturday. The Buckeyes raced out to an early lead and never let up. Quarterback Julian Sayin was near perfect -- making a strong case to potentially be the front-runner in the Heisman Trophy conversation after Week 8. He completed 36 of 42 passes for 394 yards and four touchdowns, spreading the ball effectively across the country's top receiving corps.

Still, the emphasis continues to be on the Ohio State defense, holding Wisconsin to just 144 total yards and forcing punts on seven of nine drives, with the other two possessions ending in turnovers. The Buckeyes 41 points allowed through seven games is the fewest of any FBS team since 2000.

Arizona State has Texas Tech on the ropes

Mid 3Q: Arizona State 16, No. 7 Texas Tech 7

Behind a 2-yard touchdown pass from Sam Leavitt to Jordyn Tyson midway through the third quarter, the Sun Devils lead unbeaten Texas Tech in the desert. The Red Raiders appeared to stop the Sun Devils on fourth-and-Goal from the 4, but Texas Tech star edge David Bailey was whistled for roughing the passer, providing Arizona State with a fresh set of downs. The drive for Arizona State started in Texas Tech territory after an interception, leading to the Sun Devils' first touchdown on the afternoon.

SMU leads Clemson 16-7 at halftime in ACC title game rematch

SMU has a 16-7 lead on Clemson at halftime in Death Valley, as the Tigers' woeful season continues. Clemson is playing without Cade Klubnik as he deals with an ankle injury and freshman Christopher Vizzina got the starting nod in his place.

The Tigers' offense, which has struggled all season, has not been able to do much against an SMU defense that entered the game allowing 27.8 points per game to power conference opponents. Vizzina is 13-of-17 for 112 yards and a touchdown, but the running game has been non-existent with 31 yards on the ground.

On the other side, SMU hasn't done much on the ground either, but has gotten a couple explosive plays through the air and Kevin Jennings is 12-of-24 for 154 yards and a touchdown to put the Mustangs on top.

The saving grace for Clemson has been their ability to hold SMU to field goals, as the Mustangs have settled for three in the first half. The Tigers will need to find something offensively to claw their way back into this game, because SMU has moved the ball solidly and if they start putting touchdowns on the board, the Tigers could find themselves below .500 by the end of this afternoon.

Indiana erases early deficit against Michigan State, takes halftime lead

HALF: Indiana 21, Michigan State 10

It hasn't all been easy for No. 3 Indiana thus far against Michigan State, but the Hoosiers hold a two-score halftime lead nonetheless.

The Spartans offense appeared rejuvenated in the early stages of its upset search in Bloomington, and it all started with quarterback Aidan Chiles, who completed 20 of 22 passes for 178 yards and a touchdown in the opening 30 minutes. Chiles is about as high-variance of a quarterback as there is in college football, and he looked like the best version of himself against the Hoosiers in building a 10-7 lead midway through the second quarter.

Heisman Trophy contender Fernando Mendoza went punch-for-punch with Chiles in the first half, though. Indiana's superstar was even more productive than his Spartan counterpart with 181 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

Georgia Tech takes down Duke 28-17 to remain undefeated at 7-0

The No. 12 Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets were short underdogs on the road in Durham on Saturday, but the ACC's lone unbeaten remained perfect with a 28-17 win over Duke.

The Yellow Jackets found themselves in a dog fight well into the fourth quarter, as it was tied 10-10 before Georgia Tech finally was able to open up a cushion in the fourth quarter thanks to some big plays by Haynes King. The Tech QB finished with 205 yards passing and 120 yards rushing, including a fourth quarter touchdown run that broke the game open.

On the other side, it was yet another game of "what ifs" for the Blue Devils, who out-gained Georgia Tech by 72 yards in the game but continued to commit back-breaking mistakes at the worst moments. Darian Mensah threw for 373 yards and two touchdowns, but it wasn't enough to overcome untimely errors. Duke fumbled a read option on the goal line for a 95-yard Georgia Tech scoop-and-score on their first possession to go down 7-0, and added a missed field goal and botched snap on a field goal that resulted in turnovers on downs.

For Georgia Tech, they move to 7-0 for the first time since 1966 and the dreams of a playoff berth are now very real. The only ranked team left on their schedule is a visit to Atlanta from Georgia at the end of the year, with Syracuse, NC State, Boston College and Pitt as their remaining ACC schedule.

Duke drops to 4-3 and will need a strong close to the year to make a solid bowl game.

Tulane comes back to beat Army on miraculous last second touchdown

Tulane survived a scare from Army on Saturday in New Orleans, erasing a seven-point, fourth-quarter deficit with two touchdowns in the final two minutes. After a fourth-down TD tied things up with just under two minutes to play, Tulane forced a three-and-out from Army and drove into field goal range with a chance to win.

Rather than leave things up to their kicker, the Green Wave opted to take a shot at the end zone and found pay dirt in the form of one of the craziest tip-drill touchdowns of the season.

This was nearly a pick, then nearly a drop and then finally, somehow, a touchdown that gave Tulane a 24-17 win over Army to keep them alive in the hotly contested conference title race in the American. It was not the best day for Jake Retzlaff and the Wave offense, but they were able to come up with the plays they needed to late in the fourth quarter and escaped with a win to move to 6-1 on the season and remain undefeated in the American.

Michigan shuts down Washington for bounce-back win

FINAL: Michigan 24, Washington 7

Michigan is back in the win column and will perhaps re-enter the top 25 after flexing its defensive muscles on Washington in a 24-7 victory. The Wolverines intercepted Demond Williams Jr. three times after the Washington quarterback committed just one turnover in the entire first half of the season.

It was not just the defense that shined in the get-right game, though. Bryce Underwood was stellar in a 21-for-27 day, and running back Jordan Marshall excelled in his largest role of the season, racking up career highs in carries (25) and rushing yards (133) with Justice Haynes out due to injury.

Coach Sherrone Moore said postgame on the Fox broadcast that the Wolverines had "tough conversations this week and really challenged each other," and they responded in a big way after suffering a loss at USC a week ago.

Vanderbilt beats LSU 31-24, prove they're a real playoff threat in the SEC

Two weeks after a gutting loss in Tuscaloosa, Vanderbilt got another opportunity to take down a top-10 SEC opponent when LSU made the trip to Nashville, and this time Diego Pavia and company did not let the chance slip away.

Pavia put on a masterclass, authoring a performance that will vault him up the Heisman Trophy watch list, to lead No. 17 Vanderbilt to a 31-24 victory over the 10th-ranked Tigers. Pavia finished the game with 160 yards passing and a touchdown, but the Commodores did much of their damage on the ground. Pavia led the team with 89 rushing yards and a pair of touchdowns, and the 'Dores rushed for 239 yards as a team as they dominated LSU in the trenches on both sides of the ball.

Defensively, they yielded some big plays, but came up with a string of consecutive stops in the fourth quarter to put the game away. Garrett Nussmeier was under pressure all afternoon, and Vanderbilt's pass rush was a huge reason they were able to close out Saturday's win.

Vanderbilt will now move closer to the top 10 after a win that stamped them as a legit threat to make the College Football Playoff -- and a potential threat to make it to Atlanta for the SEC Championship game. For LSU, it's their second loss in three weeks, as Brian Kelly's seat is heating up a bit in Baton Rouge as they are now one loss away from being effectively eliminated from playoff contention.

Diego Pavia scrambles for a 21-yard TD to put Vandy back up 10 on LSU

As quickly as LSU got back into the game, Vanderbilt had an answer thanks to more heroics from Diego Pavia. The star quarterback pulled a Houdini act on fourth-and-1 at midfield to keep the drive alive and then paid it off with a 21-yard scramble for a touchdown after LSU's defense lost all contain on the left side.

Pavia hit the Heisman pose after his touchdown run, as he puts together a game that will run at the top of his highlight reel this season. He's got 148 passing yards and a touchdown and another 69 yards and two TDs on the ground today.

His latest TD moved Vanderbilt back in front 31-21 as the game moves to the fourth quarter, and the Commodores look poised to pull off yet another huge win under Clark Lea.

LSU's Zavion Thomas breaks multiple tackles for a 62-yard TD to keep the Tigers close to Vandy

After Vanderbilt scored a TD to go up 24-13, LSU was in danger of letting things get out of hand, but Zavion Thomas delivered the spark the Tigers' offense needed when he caught a checkdown pass from Garrett Nussmeier and broke multiple tackles before hitting the afterburners to take it to the house.

That 62-yard TD and the ensuing two-point conversion to Trey'Dez Green made it a 3-point game again in Nashville and breathed life into a Tigers team that looked like it was getting flat out overpowered by the Commodores.

The concern for LSU is that Nussmeier continues to take some huge hits from the Vandy defense, including on that touchdown pass, but he's battled through and is keeping the Tigers attached with some help from his talented receiving corps.
